A fine chemical advance has been made in the laboratory of the University of Vienna, in the manufacture, from strictly inorganic materials, and at very moderate and remunerative cost, of the alkaloids quinia, strychnia, atropia, morphia, and others. No chemist, however, has yet made a single speck of albumen, or any other truly protoplasmic substance.
Bitter things in nature at large, on the contrary, are almost invariably poisonous. Strychnia, for example, is intensely bitter, and it is well known that life cannot be supported on strychnia alone for more than a few hours.
Diminished menstruation was associated with sexual excitement, but abundant menstruation and its complete absence were both accompanied by the relief of excitement. This lasted for two years. Then, for the treatment of a trifling degree of anæmia, she was subjected to a long, and, in her case, injudicious course of hypodermic injections of strychnia.
The colonel was tired, and Anne, watching him from above as he toiled up the stairs, wondered if he needed a little strychnia. She would remember, she thought, to give it to him in the morning. After they had said good-night, and the colonel, indeed, was in his bed, she heard the knocker clang and slipped down the stairs to answer.
Gave him two large spoonfuls of the castor-oil mixture daily; this consists of three parts of castor-oil, two of syrup of buck-thorn, and one of syrup of white poppies. 23d. A little better; can lift his head and throw it upon his side, and will still eat when fed. Continue the mixture, and give half a grain of strychnia daily. 24th. Little change. 27th.
Of these nitrogenous alkaloids, even the nuts of the tree, which furnishes the most powerful, swift poison of the world, contains but three the above-named strychnia, brucia, and ignatia principles shared in common with its pathological congener, the St. Ignatius bean. First, those whose action is merely acrid so far as known expending themselves upon the mucous coats.
I have at length determined to have recourse to the charge. A piece of thick sheep's leather was fitted lo her loins and haunches. 18th. She appears to be improving, but it is very slowly. 31st. Very little change. The plaster keeps on well: she has no power over her hind limbs; but she eats and drinks as well as ever. 23d August. No change. Give her half a grain of strychnia, morning and night.
"All that is humanly possible shall be done," he affirmed. "And your treatment?" said I. "I have no drugs here, but already I have despatched a man to San Lorenzo for strychnia, which in the first stage is invaluable. Meantime I must do what I can with whisky. Have you plenty of whisky?" "Yes, but " "I want a gallon of it." "Of course you are aware you know, I mean "
To get rid of this annoying little animal as speedily and secretly as possible, he had recourse to the powers of strychnia, which produced in a very short time similar effects upon the poor victim, and the result was another great hue and cry about mad dogs.
Banneker took the silver-framed portrait and placed it in the flaccid hand. The fingers closed over it. The filmiest wraith of a smile played about the blue lips. An hour later, Io came out to Banneker waiting fearfully in the big room. "She won't have a doctor. I've given her the strychnia and she insists she'll be all right." "Don't you think I ought to go for the doctor, anyway?"
