The processes of decay of these tumor materials liberate large quantities of alkaloids of putrefaction, and these, in turn, stimulate the normal, healthy cells with which they come in contact to rapid, abnormal multiplication.

Nor did I. Some one, I believe, exerted a peculiar force in order to get her into his power. What was that force? At first I thought it might have been the hackneyed knock-out drops, but tests by the coroner's physician eliminated that. Then I thought it might be one of the alkaloids, such as morphine, cocaine, and others.

Can there be special compounds in mushrooms, alkaloids, apparently, which vary according to the botanical genus? Would it be possible to isolate them and study their properties fully? Who knows whether medical science could not employ them in relieving our ailments, even as it employs quinine, morphia and other alkaloids?

Archer at once bluntly stated that, in his opinion, poison had been administered to the deceased lady, though of what precise kind he was somewhat at a loss to conjecture opium essentially, he thought, though certainly not in any of its ordinary preparations one of the alkaloids probably which chemical science had recently discovered.

And then come those false friends, those Thug helpers, the alkaloids that stifle natural fatigue and kill rest black coffee, cocaine " "I see," said Isbister. "I did my work," said the sleepless man with a querulous intonation. "And this is the price?" "Yes." For a little while the two remained without speaking. "You cannot imagine the craving for rest that I feel a hunger and thirst.

Such stimulation, however, Pilcher and Sollmann believe may be secondary to asphyxia. Nicotin they found to cause intense stimulation of the vasomotor center. Ergot and hydrastis and its alkaloids seem to have no effect on the vasomotor center. Strophanthus acted on this center only moderately, and digitalis very slightly, if at all.

A fine chemical advance has been made in the laboratory of the University of Vienna, in the manufacture, from strictly inorganic materials, and at very moderate and remunerative cost, of the alkaloids quinia, strychnia, atropia, morphia, and others. No chemist, however, has yet made a single speck of albumen, or any other truly protoplasmic substance.

The atrophying muscles of the digestive tube, unable to hurry on the mixed products of indigestion; fermentation; and micro-organisms inciting fermentations and elaborating toxic alkaloids, poison and disorder the functions of life. Man's outdoor life enables him to escape many of these evils.

But with this granted, the simplest alkaloid formulas, those of conine, C H N, and nicotine, C H N , still showed that the amine molecule contained quite complex groups of carbon and hydrogen atoms, and the great majority of the alkaloids the non-volatile ones contained groups in which the three elements, carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, all entered.

The conviction accordingly forces itself upon us that, if we want to attack the problem of building up any of these important alkaloids artificially, we must turn to these bases as our starting point. As already stated, both series occur in coal-tar and the pyridine series also more abundantly in bone-oil.
