It is the Law that he who soweth shall reap what he soweth, therefore the man that is full of righteous deeds for the sake of self-merit shall enter into the prison of the sevenfold gems, for he doubteth the marvellous wisdom of Him that hath the Light.
Lower and lower sank the industrial, financial, and spiritual condition of the household. For the first time the awful truth of Scripture, "Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap," seemed to dawn upon him with a reality that it is hard for mortal to appreciate. Within a few months the whole mistake of slavery seemed to have concentrated itself upon this household.
There are some of you that are sowing to the flesh, and as sure as God lives, you will 'of the flesh reap corruption. 'Whatsoever a man soweth, that, even here, 'shall he also reap. And let me remind you that that law of inheriting the fruit of our doings is by no means exhausted by the experience of life.
Hence are fruits known to be generated from seeds. Good or bad as the seed is that the husbandman soweth in his field, good or bad are the fruits that he reaps. As, unsown with seed, the soil, though tilled, becomes fruitless, so, without individual Exertion, Destiny is of no avail. From the union of the soil and the seed doth the harvest grow.
So, if our work is but preparatory for that of those who come after, let us not think it of slight importance, and let us be sure that all who have had any portion in the toil shall share in the victory, that 'he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
A slight taxation upon even acknowledged superfluity, would in some cases produce an ample revenue for many indigent families, although religion claims on their behalf more than a scanty and unwilling pittance; for "he which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully, shall reap also bountifully.
Men that sow some great prairie broadcast cannot go into the harvest-field and say, 'I sowed the seed from which that ear came, and you the seed from which this one sprang. But the waving abundance belongs to them all, and each may be sure that his work survives and is glorified there, 'that he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. So a perpetual remembrance is sure for the smallest Christian service.
The second picture is of a more specific kind. The 'froward man' here seems to be the same as the slanderer in the next clause. He utters perverse things, and so soweth strife and parts friends. There are people whose mouths are as full of malicious whispers as a sower's basket is of seed, and who have a base delight in flinging them broadcast.
Is this world your only treasure? This life all your joy and pleasure? Are you laying up no portion In the sky? He that soweth to the wind Shall a whirlwind's harvest find, And he'll see himself a pauper By and by. We must reap of what we sow, it is said: Are you sowing to the flesh, O maid? For many years I wanted to go as a foreign missionary, but my way seemed hedged about.
This is, however, an invariable feature throughout all the dispensations of God, and you would do well to examine carefully into it, that you may add experience to your faith in the Scripture assertion, "What a man soweth, that shall he also reap." May you be given grace to sow such present seed as may bring forth a harvest of peace to yourself, and peace to your friends!
