Do ye not say, That yet there are four months, and then the harvest cometh? behold, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and look upon the fields; for they are now white for harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. For herein is the saying true, That one soweth and another reapeth.

'Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. All works are not good that seem to be so. It is one thing for a man's ways to be right in his own eye, and another for them to be right in God's. How was both David the king, Nathan the prophet, and Uzza the priest, deceived, touching good works!

And He said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? 14. The sower soweth the word. 15. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. 16.

"He that soweth to the flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption." I shall now come to the second thing contained in the text, namely, to give you a more distinct description of the men that are thus bid to commit the keeping of their souls to God. And they are thus described: they that "suffer according to the will of God."

In some respects she has taught important lessons. She has illustrated the power of conscience and the sacredness of duty. She was a great preacher of the doctrine that "whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." She showed that those who do not check and control the first departure from virtue will, in nine cases out of ten, hopelessly fall. These are great certitudes.

I, and the children whom Thou hast given me. And there will stand some before the Throne, solitary; and I wonder if they will not feel lonely when they go into heaven, and find not a soul there to look them in the eyes and say, 'Thou didst lead me to the Christ, and I am here to welcome thee. 'He that soweth and he that reapeth shall rejoice together. Do you not think that then there will steal a shadow of shame across the spirit of the servant who stood idle in the market-place all the day with the wretched excuse, 'No man hath hired me, when the Master had hired him beforehand, and given him such wages in advance?

And now I shall tell you who be the ploughers: for God's word is a seed to be sown in God's field, that is, the faithful congregation, and the preacher is the sower. And it is in the gospel: Exivit qui seminat seminare semen suum; "He that soweth, the husbandman, the ploughman, went forth to sow his seed."

But works and afflictions merit, not justification, but other remunerations, as the reward is offered for the works in these passages: He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly, and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully, 2 Cor. 9, 6. Here clearly the measure of the reward is connected with the measure of the work.

The whole of a life may be set forth in the pregnant figure, 'A sower went forth to sow, and 'Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. The seed may lie long dormant, but the green shoots will appear in due time, and pass through all the stages of 'first the blade, and then the ear, and after that the full corn in the ear. The sower has to become the reaper, and the reaper has to eat of the bread made from the product of the long past sowing.

One leak will sink a ship; and one sin will destroy a sinner. He that lives in sin and hopes for happiness hereafter, is like him that soweth cockle and thinks to fill his barn with wheat and barley. Crush sin in the conception, lest it bring forth death in thy soul. Some men's hearts are narrow upwards and wide downwards narrow as to God, but wide for the world.
