The desire for human expression is already, as we have seen, very clearly discernible in the symphonies and sonatas of Beethoven, but it is since his time that the most remarkable development has taken place.
He plays an old air ever so old we call it the 'Heynal, on the top of one of the towers. The only time I was ever in Cracow I heard a man at a concert a magnificent player improvise on it. And it comes into one of Chopin's sonatas." He began to hum under his breath a sweet wandering melody. And suddenly he sprang up, and ran to the piano.
For he had acquired a little worm-eaten spinet, and he had added to his treasures the first six sonatas of Emmanuel Bach. On the third floor of the house which contained the garret, lived a celebrated Italian poet, Metastasio. Haydn and the poet struck up an acquaintance, which resulted in the musician's introduction to the poet's favorite pupil, Marianne Martinez.
Without paying attention, I listened, during the horrors of digestion, to a number of sonatas, now and then saying: 'Magnificent! How wonderful that is! "The father was enchanted, the mother enchanted, the sister likewise; the little girl was the one who stared at me with questioning black eyes.
The rest of them contented themselves in practice with very intricate and difficult exercises in counterpoint: they called them sonatas, quartets, and symphonies.... "Sonata, what do you desire of me?" The poor thing desired nothing at all except to be a sonata. The idea behind it was abstract and anonymous, heavy and joyless. So might a lawyer conceive an art.
There are now two operas in aria which I could write, one in two acts, and the other in three. It is a translation interspersed with choruses and dancing, and specially adapted to the French stage. But this one I have not yet got a sight of. Write to me whether you have Schroter's concertos in Salzburg, or Hullmandell's sonatas. I should like to buy them to send to you. Both of them are beautiful.
There are also sonatas for violin and for 'cello with piano, and a piano scherzo. Her songs are many in number and excellent in quality. Among them are two sets of Browning Songs, six Folk Songs, and such favourites as "The Rose and the Lily," "Clover Blossoms," "Confession," "At Break of Day," and many others. In the front rank of American pianists is Julia Rivé-King.
At the age of nine years Felix had attained such proficiency that we find him taking the pianoforte part in a trio at a public concert of a Herr Gugel's, and when twelve years old he began to compose, and actually wrote a trio, some sonatas, a cantata, and several organ pieces. His home life was in the highest degree favorable to his musical development.
He gave me of his best. I never practiced more than two or three hours a day just enough to keep fresh. Often I came to my lesson unprepared, and he would have me play things sonatas, concertos which I had not touched for a year or more. He was a severe critic, but always a just one.
His impulse seems always a reflected thing, a desire to compete with some one on that person's terms. He writes fugues for organs and sonatas for violin solo under the influence of Bach, concerti grossi under the influence of Haendel, variations under that of Mozart, sonatas under that of Brahms. In vain one searches for a perfectly individual style throughout his works.
