=Spelling Schools.= For a change, even an old-fashioned spelling school is not to be scorned. Years ago this was quite the custom. An entire school would, on a challenge, go as a sleigh-ride party to the challenging school. There the spelling contest would take place.

Zelotes, alluding to something which had happened that afternoon in the course of the sleigh-ride. The sleighing that day was excellent, for there had been an ice coating on the road before, and the last not very heavy snowfall had been just enough.

Madelon nodded. "Where's yours?" "I can't have him." Dexter Beers still moved on with curious lateral twirls of his shoulders and heaves of his great chest, with its row of shining waistcoat buttons. "Pooty cold day for a sleigh-ride," he observed, with a great steam of breath. "I'll pay you well for the horse," said Madelon, in a hard voice. She followed him into the stable.

It may be that they do, but to me a picnic is purgatory and a sleigh-ride that other place, where, as my favorite Milton says, "frost performs the effect of fire." Captain Harney had kindly commenced preparing some trains, or boxes placed on sledges, which it was thought would, when lined with buffalo-skins, furnish a very comfortable kind of vehicle for the journey; and I was still inclined to think a good, deep bed of snow over the whole country no great obstacle to a sleigh-ride.

There is dancing in the lighted hall; there is love making in the dark corners; and to crown the festival there is a sleigh-ride under the cold moon, when the music of the bells, the tramping of the hoofs, the shouts of the drivers, and the shrill whistle of the Northern blast, are to the buoyant spirits of the young promenaders like draughts of exhilarating wine.

Sometimes he dashes off over the surface of the water at a speed of fifteen knots an hour, towing the boat, while the crew hope that their "Nantucket sleigh-ride" will end before they lose the ship for good. But once fast, the whalemen try to pull close alongside the monster.

Just this association of ideas it is which enables us to recall things we have forgotten. Our ideas on any subject say that sleigh-ride last winter resemble a lot of balls some distance apart in a room, but all connected by strings.
