In the same century the Arab mosque was torn down and the new cathedral begun. Unlike the cathedral of Sigüenza, it is neither elegant, harmonious, nor of great architectural value; its wealth lies chiefly in the chapels, in the doors which lead to the cloister, in the sacristy, and in the elegant high altar.

The city of Sigüenza, situated on the slopes of a hill crowned by the castle, is a village rather than a town; there are, however, fewer spots in Spain that are more picturesque in their old age, and there is a certain uniformity in the architecture that reminds one of German towns; this is not at all characteristic of Spain, where so many styles mix and mingle until hardly distinguishable from each other.

He stared upon me, with terror in his eye, to see as he believed a common sight enough, that of an Indian chief rejoicing at the death of one of his oppressors. 'What devil are you, he said hoarsely, 'sent from hell to torment me at the last? 'Remember the dying prayer of Isabella de Siguenza, whom you struck and cursed, I answered mocking.

"My fates call out," he cried, and forthwith applied himself to hasten the preparations for his departure. The romantic picture of his philosophical retirement at Juste, painted originally by Sandoval and Siguenza, reproduced by the fascinating pencil of Strada, and imitated in frequent succession by authors of every age and country, is unfortunately but a sketch of fancy.

Econom. de los Amigos del Pais, for September 4th, 1823, it is said that "Don Antonio Siguenza paid a visit to the volcano of Albay on March 11th," and that the Society "ordered a medal to be struck in commemoration of the event, and in honor of the aforesaid Siguenza and his companions."

During the French invasion in the beginning of the nineteenth century, Sigüenza had already lost its political significance. The invaders occupied the castle, and, as was their custom, threw documents and archives into the fire, to make room for themselves, and to spend the winter comfortably. Consequently, the notices we have of the cathedral church are but scarce.

On the threshold of her tomb Isabella de Siguenza paused and looked round wildly as though for help, scanning each of the silent watchers to find a friend among them. Then her eye fell upon the niche and the heap of smoking lime and the men who guarded it, and she shuddered and would have fallen had not those who attended her led her to the chair and placed her in it a living corpse.

'Isabella de Siguenza, I said, 'I am your friend, the best you ever had and the last, as you shall learn presently. Tell me where this man is, for there is that between us which must be settled. 'If you are my friend, weary me no more. I do not know where he is. Months ago he went whither you will scarcely follow, to the furthest Indies; but you will never find him there.

Pray deliver it quickly. Time presses, Cousin Wingfield. Who sends messages to an exile like myself? 'Isabella de Siguenza, whom you cheated with a false marriage and abandoned, I said. He started from his chair and stood over me. 'What of her? he whispered fiercely. 'Only this, the monks walled her up alive with her babe. 'Walled her up alive! Mother of God! how do you know that?

Isabella de Siguenza had prayed that a fate like to her own fate should befall him, and it was upon him now. Nor indeed, remembering all that had been, was I minded to avert it, even if it had been in my power to do so.
