W. and H. Parkers. I hope Hughoc is going on and prospering with God and Miss M'Causlin. If I could think on anything sprightly, I should let you hear every other post; but a dull, matter-of-fact business like this scrawl, the less and seldomer one writes the better. Among other matters-of-fact I shall add this, that I am and ever shall be, my dear Sir, your obliged, STIRLING, 28th August 1787.

Her temper, radiant rather than bland, was none of the patientest on occasion; nor was M. de Voltaire the least of a Job, if you came athwart him the wrong way. But we hope it was only once in the quarter, or seldomer: after which the element would be clearer for some time.

Nor do I believe that any prudent man need shrink from the judgment of the people in questions relating to particulars, as, for instance, in the distribution of honours and dignities. For in such matters only, the people are either never mistaken, or at any rate far seldomer than a small number of persons would be, were the distribution entrusted to them.

These thoughts are dreadful. LEONORA. And yet the picture is not finished. Let love be sacrificed to greatness and even peace of mind if Fiesco but remained unchanged. O God! that thought is racking torture. Seldom do angels ascend the throne still seldomer do they descend it such. Can he know pity who is raised above the common fears of man?

The diffident man, in some cases seldomer, and in some oftener and in a more glaring manner, deserts the cause of truth, and by that means is the cause of misrepresentation, and indirectly the propagator of falshood.

The mandrill and drill, which have their hinder ends especially ornamented, display it even whilst quite young, more frequently and more ostentatiously than do the other kinds. Next in order comes Cynocephalus hamadryas, whilst the other species act in this manner seldomer.

And the duty of a bosom-friend, besides rushing off at once to tell you if she hears anybody say anything nasty of you behind your back a thing which you never do is to sympathise with you in all your love-affairs a thing which you do even seldomer."

I am satisfied that many of the accidents which happen from feeble patients tumbling down stairs, fainting after getting up, &c., happen solely from the nurse popping out of a door to speak to the patient just at that moment; or from his fearing that she will do so. And that if the patient were even left to himself, till he can sit down, such accidents would much seldomer occur.

He is far seldomer at fault than any other hound except the blood-hound, and rarely fails of running down his game. Of the stoutness of this dog, the following anecdotes will be a sufficient illustration. A deer, in the spring of 1822, was turned out before the Earl of Derby's hounds in Hayes Common.

Sin is dreadful and murderous in the sight of a sanctified soul: wherefore the apprehending of that makes us often forget, and often question whether we have any grace or no. 4. The little fishes swim on the top of the water, but the biggest and best keep down below, and so are seldomer seen. 5. Grace, as to quantity, seems less than sin.
