Mother, all this time, was very busy with her writing. She used to send off a good many long blue envelopes with stories in them and large envelopes of different sizes and colours used to come to her. Sometimes she would sigh when she opened them and say: "Another story come home to roost. Oh, dear, Oh, dear!" and then the children would be very sorry.
It is upon that side that, at a certain time each flood, the current mentioned by my uncle sets so strong into the bay; a little later, when the Roost begins to work higher, an undertow runs still more strongly in the reverse direction; and it is the action of this last, as I suppose, that has scoured that part so deep.
When at home at the Roost, the stout Jacob was not idle; but was prone to carry on a petty warfare of his own, for his private recreation and refreshment.
The ground was literally covered with feathers; broken limbs hung from nearly every tree, while in one instance a forked hackberry had split from the weight of the birds. "Eh, sir," said I sleepily. "Turn where?" "Turn in, my boy," he replied laughing. "Go to roost, I mean. To bed if you understand that better." "But where shall I go, sir?"
Up the rivers, in the interior, there is another cassique, nearly the same size and of the same habits, though not gifted with its powers of imitation. Except in breeding-time, you will see hundreds of them retiring to roost amongst the moca-moca-trees and low shrubs on the banks of the Demerara, after you pass the first island. They are not common on the sea-coast.
There was no pavement, and it was the less needed that the ways were rarely used by wheels of any description. The village was but a roost, like the dwellings of the sea birds which also haunted the rocks. It was a gray morning with a gray sky and a gray sea; all was brown and gray, peaceful and rather sad.

So a hen closes its toes at every step it takes, as if it grasped something, and, of course, when it settles down on its roost, they grasp that tight and hold it fast till morning.
