From side to side across the entrance to the choir ran the rood-screen, a vast erection of brown oak and black iron, surmounted by a high loft, from which glimmered down sheaves of silvered organ pipes, and, higher yet, in deep shadow, he could make out three gigantic figures, of which the center one was nailed to a cross.

"The young fella with the foxy mustash is Docthor Lyden," whispered an informant in response to a question, "and the owld lad that's lookin' at ye now is Heraty, that owns the shop above " At this juncture an emissary from the Bench very kindly offered us seats within the rood-screen. We took them, on a high wooden settle, beside the magisterial table, and the business of the court proceeded.

I was only yesterday in an old church, where I saw an ancient font-cover a sort of carved extinguisher and some dark panels of a rood-screen. They had been, both cover and panels, coarsely and brightly painted and gilt; and, horrible to reflect, it flashed upon me that they must have once been both glaring and vulgar.

Heraty without a smile, "we must call upon you again!" Mr. Byrne's meek scholastic face once more appeared at the rood-screen. "Well, I should say," he ventured decorously, "that the expression is locally applied to what I may call a plume or a feather that is worn on various parts of the sheep's back, for a mark, as I might say, of distinction." "Thank you, Mr. Byrne, thank you," said Mr.

Of much interest is the tapestry on the west wall representing the marriage of Henry VII. On the front of the gallery and on the Jacobean pulpit are inscriptions setting forth the names of their donors and the dates. The rood-screen is modern but the old double lectern is interesting; chained to it is a "Breeches" Bible and Erasmus' "Paraphrase."

I was early, and the building was nearly empty when I entered the porch; but it was quiet and restful to sit there and review the past week, and watch the sunshine lighting up the red brick walls and touching the rood-screen, while a faint purple gleam fell on the chancel pavement. Two ladies entered the seat before me, and I looked at them a little curiously.

The rood-screen was open, or broken down, I could not tell which. The choir was bare, like a clearing in the woods, and filled with blazing light. On the high steps, with his back to the altar, stood Man, his face gleaming with pride. "I am the Lord!" he cried. "There is none above me! No law, no God! Man is power. Man is the highest of all!"

On both the S. and N. walls of the church there are consecration crosses. The rood-screen is partly modern, but contains some old work. Three altar frontals have been constructed out of a beautiful cope which was discovered under the pulpit.

I had hardly admired the grey interior, the bare walls growing into the roof in unbroken curves, the massive stone rood-screen, the sorrowful faces in the holy pictures, when a little procession filed into the church; four girls carrying a flower-bedecked coffin, half a dozen elders, and a pack of children carrying candles a sight at once terrible and diurnal, a child's funeral.

On the stone walls above the wainscoting were hung great hatchments, the canvas of some fraying away from the black quadrangular frames after a lapse of years, and none of them very recently hung there. The front of the pew was open to the chancel, and commanded a full view of the reading-desk and a side glimpse of the pulpit through the bars of the carved, rather battered rood-screen.
