Most recent scholars follow the chronological arrangement proposed by the great Orientalist Nöldeke in 1860. Friedrich Schwally in his newly revised edition of Nöldeke's great work on the Koran follows his master in almost every detail. Rodwell's translation of the Koran, recently issued in "Everyman's Library," arranges the suras chronologically according to Nöldeke's scheme.

'Have you ever known in your life, he asked, 'a moment when you felt that a great change happened to you? Are you pretending? Have you ever been conscious of a new birth in your soul? The vicar fenced with the question, but it was of no avail. The dying man raised himself suddenly on an elbow. 'You can't help me! he cried angrily. He seized Rodwell's wrist and held it tightly, fiercely.

"He'd been in the next shop. The people there will be able to swear to him he gave them plenty of trouble on purpose." "And you," Mr. Bundercombe murmured, "have the necklace?" "I have!" Rodwell snapped. "What about it? I've got to divide with the girl here. How much do you want?" "Only the necklace!" Mr. Bundercombe replied. As he spoke, the fingers tightened their grasp, and he bent Rodwell's hand down to the bed, as it were for emphasis. 'You don't know, he cried. 'You're pretending. The words you say are words for the living. I am a dying man. Have you the same message for the living and the dying? Have I a lifetime before me in which to work out repentance? You can't help me! You don't know!

"We can't do nothing else," said the man; "we've got Rodwell's boat here she's the best craft on this coast for such a trip, and we've made three tries in her, but it's no good; nothing could live in such a sea as this; we've been beat back every time, and well-nigh swamped."

He had may I guess? some strong reason for avoiding you; and he is a man of some authority in the Company and moving to still greater. He would not know the Indians who actually carried you away; but Factor Rodwell would, and factors are only human, and sooner or later Gerald Ainley will be able to considerably influence Mr. Rodwell's future. Therefore well, Q.E.D.! Do you not agree with me?"
