The moral and the social quality of conduct are, in the last analysis, identical with each other. It is then but to restate explicitly the import of our earlier chapters regarding the social function of education to say that the measure of the worth of the administration, curriculum, and methods of instruction of the school is the extent to which they are animated by a social spirit.

If Christianity means anything definite anything more than a mood of precarious sentiment the only logical form of it is that represented by the Oecumenical Church of Rome. This had been my previous argument, and, stimulated by current events, I felt impelled to restate it in greater detail and with more pungent illustrations.

This pathetic phenomenon is characteristic of religious minds that have outgrown their traditional faith without being able to restate the natural grounds and moral values of that somehow precious system in which they no longer believe.

The nature and scope of the Twenty-one Demands could now be no longer hidden; and in response to the growing indignation which began to be voiced by the press and the pressure which British diplomacy brought to bear, Japan found it necessary to modify some of the most important items. Accordingly Japanese diplomacy was forced to restate and re-group the whole corpus of the demands.

The subsequent scene with the ghost convinces Hamlet that he is not the victim of malign influences as far as he is capable of conviction, for his very first words when alone restate the doubt: "O all you host of heaven! O earth! What else? And shall I couple hell?"

It is so easy to hide our ignorance under such expressions as the "plan of creation," "unity of design," &c., and to think that we give an explanation when we only restate a fact. Any one whose disposition leads him to attach more weight to unexplained difficulties than to the explanation of a certain number of facts will certainly reject my theory.

Against him, one Mo Ti had been preaching universal altruism; but I judge, not too sensibly, and without appeal to philosophy or mysticism. Thought of all kinds was in a ferment, and the world filled with the confused noise of its expression; clear voices were needed, to restate the message of the Teachers of old.

And the writing of that parchment, sealed with the seal of Saint Mark, stood thus: "Essendo state levate le Censure è restate parimente rivocato il Protesto." It was whispered low that the cardinal, under his cape, made the sign of the cross and murmured a word of absolution.

But as he contradicted himself flatly in trying to restate his discourse, and refused to let us see his sermon, those who heard him were disgusted with his sophistry and tergiversation. However, our labors in this direction are having an effect. Women are now making their attacks on the Church all along the line.

Each age must be at liberty "to restate the doctrines of the past in accordance with the newness of the age and with the ancient verity of truth." How feeble my own attempt is in this matter, I quite understand; I am still a child of the struggle. It has all come in my lifetime and I have seen and felt not a little of the bitterness of it. I believe the time is ripe for a definite peace.
