A man's unbidden thoughts are part of him and must be acknowledged. Psychoanalysis cannot be employed upon a number of subjects at once. It lies between physician and patient, teacher and pupil. The unconscious but active motive must be brought under the conscious will. The fantastic world of childhood must be re-created.

In the Waterloo period there was a general rough-and-tumble athleticism among average Englishmen. It cannot be re-created by cricket, or by conscription, or by any artificial means. It was a thing of the soul. It came out of laughter, religion, and the spirit of the place. But it was like the modern French duel in this that it might happen to anybody.

That is, there were some accidents which once created continued to exist of their own accord some length of time, and there were others which had to be re-created anew every moment in order to continue to exist.

Even the great national movement which Mr William O'Brien re-created in the United Irish League had almost ceased to function. It was gradually superseded by a secret sectarian organisation which was the absolute antithesis of all free development of democratic opinion and the complete negation of liberty and fair play.

This is the aspect of the national life which is inevitably forced on our attention the diplomatic aspect in an age when diplomacy was playing an immense part in public affairs. For England, it might almost be said that diplomatic methods had been created by Henry VII., maintained by Wolsey, dropped again for thirty years, and then re-created by Elizabeth.

She had died, as it were, to her old self, she would be re-created to that life of holy mysteries, henceforth a double mission awaited her, double hopes, double fears, those little untried hands and she raised them before her must work two shares in the task of life, but there was no discouragement in the thought.

To me it possessed a soul; and the soul, arms, that were amorously held out, inviting, pleading. This was the spot, and not by the green waves, to strip my mind of culture, to tear a club from nature's forest and do battle for existence! Here, in the very birthplace of silence where I could smell the loam of untouched wilderness, would be the haunt of my re-created, or pre-created, self.

Those garments they were Ernest's gift Ernest's taste; they were like the last relic of that delicious life which now seemed to have fled for ever. All traces of that life of him, the loving, the protecting, the adored; all trace of herself, as she had been re-created by love, was to be lost to her for ever. She was still sobbing in vehement and unrestrained passion, when Darvil re-entered.

Just as Mrs Hamps, having re-created her elaborate smile, was allowing it finally to expire, she had to bring it into existence once more, and very suddenly, for Janet returned to the wall. "You won't forget tennis after tea," said Janet shortly. Edwin said that he should not. "Well, well!" Mrs Hamps commented, and sat down in the wicker-chair of Darius.

She kissed him, and, his eyes shut, the touch of her lips re-created about him the parlor of the Braleys, the stiffly arranged furniture with its gay plush, the varnished fretwork of the organ, the pink glow of the lamp. She was Hannah!
