A solid salt of radium develops such an amount of heat that to every single gram there is an emission of one hundred calories per hour, in other words, radium can melt its weight in ice in the time of one hour. As a result of its emission of heat radium has always a temperature higher by several degrees than its surroundings.

"Radium has been near that tray," he answered. "It is radioactive. I suspected it first when I saw that violet color. That is what radium does to that kind of glass. You see, if radium exists in a gram of inactive matter only to the extent of one in ten-thousand million parts its presence can be readily detected by this radioscope, and everything that has been rendered radioactive is the same.

It gives off but little light, its luminosity being largely due to the stimulation of the impurities in the radium by the powerful but invisible radium rays. Radium stimulates powerfully various mineral and chemical substances near which it is placed. It is an infallible test of the genuineness of the diamond.

But we shall see more presently of the enormous energy displayed within the little system of the atom. We may add that after its first transformation the radium passes, much more quickly, through a further series of changes. The frontiers of the atomic systems were breaking down.

"But why, if you could pick me off the Earth, do you not draw the radium ores in the same way?" Phobar demanded. "The orange-ray picks up only loose, portable objects. We can and will transport the radium ores here by means of the ray after they have been mined and placed on platforms or disks." "Why did you select me from all the millions of people on Earth?"

Under these circumstances, the radium still gives out heat, boiling away the liquid air until the latter has entirely disappeared. Instead of the radiation diminishing with time, it rather seems to increase. Called on to explain all this, science can only say that a molecular change must be going on in the radium, to correspond to the heat it gives out.

And there are souls, the reverse of radium, with unlimited absorptive capacities." "Vampire-souls," she observed, with a shudder, and her face blanched. "No," he said, "don't say that." And then he suddenly seemed to grow in stature. His face was ablaze, like the face of a god.

You know that these have to be manufactured by artificial light, as exposure to sunlight always results in an explosion. You have noticed that their bullets explode when they strike an object? Well, the opaque, outer coating is broken by the impact, exposing a glass cylinder, almost solid, in the forward end of which is a minute particle of radium powder.

But amongst the Moderns, the most Learned Gassendus in his Ingenious Epistle publish'd in the Year 1642. Deinde aquam non esse quidem coloris ex se candidi & radium tamen ex reflexum versus oculum candicare.

A wave of Oriental thought lifted many to a curious idealism and, as so many other centuries had done before, there came to the nineteenth a fin de siècle glow that lifted up the curve still higher. Eddy appeared, radium was discovered and appendicitis flourished.
