I can feel, even at this moment, the thrilling of my boyish bosom, whenever by chance I caught a glimpse of her white frock fluttering among the shrubbery. I now began to read poetry. I carried about in my bosom a volume of Waller, which I had purloined from my mother's library; and I applied to my little fair one all the compliments lavished upon Sacharissa.
I refer to the minute search of a house during the owner's absence. If you read that excellent story, entitled The Purloined Letter, by Edgar Allan Poe, you will find a record of the kind of thing I mean, which is better than any description I, who have so often taken part in such a search, can set down.
"If you wish to have a full account of the matter, you should tender full payment," said the butler, who considered this play of words exceedingly apt and forcible. "Yes, yes, I will not be ungenerous," replied Mr. Fabian taking a bank-note from his pocket. "Carl, the fool of the valley purloined the hares and partridges." "What! that cur! the son of old Lonner!" "The same." "Are you certain?"
"But he isn't here. You see, directly I found that he was a sock-sneaker I gave him the boot. That's why I went to London to get a new man." "Then, if the man Meadowes is no longer in the house it could not be he who purloined my manuscript. The whole thing is inexplicable." After which we brooded for a bit.
He could only hope to manage them after getting all the remaining goods safely into a house in Cabango; he might then deduct something from their pay for what they had purloined on the way. His village consists of about two hundred huts and ten or twelve square houses, constructed of poles with grass interwoven.
A watch, as I am informed, was stationed to prevent embezzlement and not a single ounce of Teas was suffered to be purloined by the populace. One or two persons being detected in endeavouring to pocket a small quantity were stripped of their acquisitions and very roughly handled.
He evidently subserves some useful purpose in the avian community, or he would not be treated with so much consideration. A young cowbird that I purloined from the nest and tried to rear by hand did not prove a pleasant pet. He was placed in a large cage with several other kinds of young birds.
He went as far as the Happy Heart corral. Behind the corral he sat down on his heels, and took out the letter he had purloined from Luke Tweezy. He opened the envelope and read the finger-marked enclosure by the light of matches shielded behind his hat. The letter ran: DEAR FRIEND LUKE: I don't think much of your plan. Too dangerous. The Land Office is getting stricter every day.
I have no clew as to who took it. It was numbered "Here a happy thought struck me. In all my description of the watch I had merely described my own, a very cheap affair which I had won at a raffle. My visitor was deceiving me, though for what purpose I did not on the instant divine. No one would like to suspect him of having purloined his wife's tiara.
Love is the only way that immortality can be attained. It cannot be "taken," like degrees of secret societies. It cannot be purloined, or feigned. Fear has never made people good. The doctrine of punishment has never deterred the sinner. Even in his apparent acceptance of the doctrine of sin and of consequent punishment, the poor sinner has known better.
