But this evidence, as I mentioned at the outset, establishes more than the date; it indicates the latitude of the place where the most ancient of Ptolemy's forty-eight constellations were first definitely adopted by astronomers. If we assume that at this place the southernmost constellations were just fully seen when due south, we find for the latitude about thirty-eight degrees north.

Ptolemy's system of geography in eight books, founded on that of Marinus of Tyre, was scarcely less celebrated throughout the Middle Ages than the Almagest. It contained little, however, that need concern us here, being rather an elaboration of the doctrines to which we have already sufficiently referred.

Mode of obtaining books. The Jewish Scriptures. Seclusion of the Jews. Interest felt in their Scriptures. Jewish slaves in Egypt. Ptolemy's designs. Ptolemy liberates the slaves. Their ransom paid. Ptolemy's success. The Septuagint. Early copies of the Septuagint. Present copies. Various other plans of the Ptolemies. Means of raising money. Heavy taxes. Poverty of the people.

All these things were done with the utmost secrecy, and so cunning and adroit were the conspirators in forming and executing their plots, that Caesar seems to have had no knowledge of the measures which his enemies were taking, until he suddenly heard that the main body of Ptolemy's army was approaching the city, at least twenty thousand strong.

Merodach-Baladan once more made his escape, flying probably to Susiana, where we afterwards find his sons living as refugees. Sennacherib, before quitting Babylon, appointed as tributary king an Assyrian named Belipni, who seems to be the Belibus of Ptolemy's Canon, and the Elibus of Polyhistor.

In the meantime Ptolemy's younger daughter, hoping the throne would become vacant, made her escape from the palace to Achillas, and assisted him in prosecuting the war. But they soon quarrelled about the command, which circumstance enlarged the presents to the soldiers, for each endeavoured by great sacrifices to secure their affection.

Second Kaiser is Alphonso King of Castille, Alphonso the Wise, whose saying about Ptolemy's Astronomy, "That it seemed a crank machine; that it was pity the Creator had not taken advice!" is still remembered by mankind; this and no other of his many sayings and doings. Confused crank machine this of the German Empire too, your Majesty? Better stay at home, and date "TOLETI."

Felix Polydore referred me to his wife and said he would abide by her decision. I found her, of course, buried in books, but remembering Ptolemy's mode of gaining attention, I peremptorily closed the volume she was studying. My audacity attained its object and I proferred my request, laying great stress on the quietude she would gain thereby.

A sextant of the same materials and size. A quadrant of one and a half cubits radius, and an azimuth circle of three cubits. Ptolemy's parallactic rules, covered with brass, four cubits in the side. The sextant already described in page 134. Another quadrant, like No. 3. Zodiacal armillaries of melted brass, and turned out of the solid, of three cubits in diameter.

Two months after he had written for Ptolemy's maps, Plutarch's Lives, and the works of Suetonius and other historians of the first Roman Emperors, he addressed another letter to his Florentine friend, Niccoli, dated the 8th of January, 1424, in which he hinted at no less a forgery than the whole of Livy's History, and if circumstances had been favourable to it, we should have, doubtless, had a composition so like the original, even so much more like than even what was afterwards honourably and admirably done by Freinshemius, as to have defied detection.
