Clough follows Flathe, and says that 'the waggons were sunk in the ditch, here and there along it. Plutarch's description is most unfortunately brief. Some of the leading novelists and imaginative writers in prose have performed a like service.
His chief translations, made in good Elizabethan English, are of Pliny's Natural History, Plutarch's Morals, Suetonius, Xenophon's Cyropædia, and Camden's Britannia. There are passages in the second of these which have hardly been excelled by any later prose translator of the classics. His later years were passed in poverty.

To these works may be added Cicero's Offices, a piece not enough esteemed, purely because it is in the hands of every one; some of Seneca's Epistles, the Tragedies that go under his name; and the best of Plutarch's smaller pieces.
