The young poet was much embarrassed to hear Schiller address him in flattering terms on the subject of his poetry, but was convinced that the great man was merely encouraging him out of kindness. Afterwards he devoted himself entirely to philological studios one of his best-known publications in that department being his Parnasso Italiano, which he dedicated to Goethe in an Italian poem.
Adams amused himself for a day or two by searching Rafael's works for the figure, which he found at last in the Parnasso, the figure of Horace, of which, as it happened though Adams did not know it the British Museum owned a much finer drawing.
"Rude rimes, the which a rustick nurse did weave In savage soyle, far from Parnasso Mount." Several other of the finest productions of his brain owe their birth to the "savage soyle" of Ireland; his descriptions of the country, his dialogue on Irish affairs, his "Amoretti" and "Colin Clout's come home again," belong confessedly to this category.
The second passion of our poet, having had birth "In savage soyle, far from Parnasso Mount," is more barren of literary gossip and adventure, and may, therefore, we trust, be compressed into narrow limits. On this point, however, his biographies and biographers have hitherto preserved absolute silence.
Some of these were new, but many were adapted from other works of Handel's, chiefly from Parnasso in Festa, and there are also borrowings from Lotti and Graun. Two choruses by Graun had already been utilised in the revision of the Italian version which Handel brought out in 1737. All this time John Christopher Schmidt, now known as Smith, had been his indispensable factotum.
He was one of the wittiest and most versatile of authors, and would have risen to positions of greater dignity, if only his pen had been a little less active and his satire less severe. He wrote a book entitled Ragguagli di Parnasso , which was most successful.
He, like Count Dietrichstein, having the knife at his throat, selected her for his bride who was minus the flourishing black beard. It was the 22d of January of the year 1765, and the wedding-day of the King of Rome. From early morning the archduchesses at the palace had been practising a lyric drama from the pen of Metastasio called "Il Parnasso Confuso."
To consider the Poets after the Conjurers, I shall give you a Taste of the Italian, from the first Lines of his Preface. 'Eccoti, benigno Lettore, un Parto di poche Sere, che se ben nato di Notte, non e pero aborto di Tenebre, ma si fara conoscere Figlio d'Apollo con qualche Raggio di Parnasso.
