Dick Overend were finishing their discussion, the huge bulky form of Mayor McGrath came ponderously past them as they sat. He looked at them sideways out of his eyes he had eyes like plums in a mottled face and, being a born politician, he knew by the very look of them that they were talking of something that they had no business to be talking about.
He knows, as if by instinct, what sort of knot should be used for this, and what sort for the other whether a "reef-knot" or a "bowline," a "diamond" or an "overend" whether a "clove-hitch," a "clinch," or a "cat's paw" all these modes of splicing and trying, with five times as many more, are secrets only known to the sailor.
A young man may recover from almost any blow that does not affect his character; and this was strikingly proved in the case of that brilliant man of science, R.A. Proctor, who was afterwards stricken out of life untimely. He lost his fortune in the crash of Overend and Gurney's company, and he immediately forgot his luxurious habits and turned to work with blithe courage.
Dick Overend, also rubbing his hands; "warm evening, is it not?" The mayor gave no other answer than that deep guttural grunt which is technically known in municipal interviews as refusing to commit oneself. "Did he hear?" whispered Mr. Newberry as the mayor passed out of the club. "I don't care if he did," whispered Mr. Dick Overend.
And what's more," he added, sinking his voice to a whisper, "the time has come to speak out about it fearlessly." Mr. Overend nodded. "It's a tyranny," he said. "Worse than Russia," rejoined Mr. Newberry.
Probably not one-thousandth part of the creditors on security of Overend, Gurney and Co., had ever expected to have to rely on that security, or had ever given much real attention to it. Sometimes, indeed, the confidence in the bill-brokers goes farther. A considerable number of persons lend to them, not only without much looking at the security but even without taking any security.
Another had done good service at Acre, as a follower of Richard of the Lion Heart. When the main line came to an end, one branch settled in Norfolk. Gurney’s Bank at Norwich was one of the institutions of the city, and was as famous in my day as at a later time was the great house of Overend and Gurney, which, when it fell, created a panic in financial circles all the world over.
But everywhere they hailed it as a new sign of the glorious unity of the country. If therefore Mr. Newberry and Mr. Overend were found to be discussing the corrupt state of their city they only shared in the national sentiments of the moment. In fact in the same city hundreds of other citizens, as disinterested as themselves, were waking up to the realization of what was going on.
The Overend Gurney prosecution is the only one in late years which at all approaches it in those respects, but in that the printed depositions only extended over 164 folio pages, or much less than those in the Bank case, in which as many as 108 witnesses gave evidence before the Lord Mayor, and the preliminary examinations twenty-three in number from first to last lasted from the first of March until the 2d of July, exclusive of the time spent in remands."
Dick Overend sadly nodded assent in advance to what he knew was coming as for the present legislature well Mr.
