The last blast, to complete the excavation to sub-grade at this point, had been fired in the afternoon of the same day, and the mucking was practically completed. Great care had been taken in excavating near this point, as it was evident that the rock was not of a very stable character, but, when the excavation had been completed, it was thought that the rock remaining in place would stand.

One by one the old landmarks Mucking Lighthouse, the Thames Cattle Wharf, and Hole Haven were left behind, and at last the entrance to the creek that runs round behind Canvey Island came into sight. One would never accuse it of being a cheerful, bustling sort of place at the best of times, but at five o'clock in the morning it seemed the very picture of uninhabited desolation.

Down the study passage a gramophone struck up Florrie was a Flapper. In Study 34 there was an awful stillness. That evening on the way down to supper Gordon overheard Armour say to Meredith: "What a fool that man Jeffries is, getting bunked, and mucking up the grovel. Damned ass, the man is." Meredith agreed. Gordon didn't care very much just now about the result of a House match.

London is where it is for reasons that have long ceased to be valid; it grew there, it has accumulated associations, an immense tradition, that this constant mucking about of builders and architects is destroying almost as effectually as removal to a new site.

If one didn't care about mucking around in the garden, as Ricky seemed to delight in doing, there was so little in the way of occupation. He thought of the days as they spread before him. A little riding, a great amount of casual reading and what else? Was the South "getting" him as the tropics are supposed to "get" the Northerners?

"Nothing as yet, that I know of; but, I say, you know, he seems a great pal of Wyatt's." "I know. I spoke to him about it." "Oh, you did? That's all right, then." "Not that there's anything wrong with Wyatt." "Not a bit. Only he is rather mucking about this term, I hear. It's his last, so I suppose he wants to have a rag." "Don't blame him."

"How pretty your flowers grow!" said Lilac, stopping to look at it with admiration. "Oh, that's Peter's bed," said Agnetta carelessly, snapping off some blossoms. "He's allays mucking at it in his spare time not that he's got much, there's so much to do on the farm."

It's that: seeing a thing from only one point of view and going all out for it from that point of view. Convictions. Not mucking about all round a thing and seeing it from about twenty different sides like I do. You know, you can't possibly pull out this big, booming sort of stuff they call success if you're going to see anybody's point of view but your own. You must have convictions.

The wife's advisers, I mean, says Bloom. Then he starts all confused mucking it up about mortgagor under the act like the lord chancellor giving it out on the bench and for the benefit of the wife and that a trust is created but on the other hand that Dignam owed Bridgeman the money and if now the wife or the widow contested the mortgagee's right till he near had the head of me addled with his mortgagor under the act.

Dugald Shaw having conspicuously failed " "Failed!" repeated Cuthbert, with unprecedented energy. "Failed! I say, that's too bad of you, Miss Browne. Wasn't everybody here a lot keener than old Shaw about mucking in that silly cave where those Johnnies would have had hard work to bury anything unless they were mermaids?
