This style of housekeeping struck me as a little odd. I mention it because household management is worthy of thought. A house is more than brick and mortar, wood or paint; this to me at least was. In its plainness it was a truthful reflection of its inmates: no disguises, no illusions, no make-believes here, but stern truth and solid purpose breathed in all its arrangements.
'Were I to break your head in good earnest, quoth honest Wilfred, 'I care not how angry you are, for I should do it so much the more easily but it's hard I should get raps over the costard, and only pay you back in make-believes' Do you understand the moral of this, Frank?"
I thought they were just make-believes, but if you saw one, of course they're true. Do you s'pose we could see it again if we went out to look? Will you go with me?" "I? I! Well, I guess not. Not a step will I step " "But several steps I'll step, Mrs. Benton. I advise the money going into the office safe, that old Ephraim uses when he's at home.
All of which may seem to you somewhat childish and trivial, but I grow an old woman and have a fancy for toys and tender make-believes such as fairy landscapes seen through the big end of a spy-glass. The actual landscape, at times, is a trifle discouragingly rain-washed and cloudy! -Roger and Mary are here. Their two boys are just gone back to school again.
And being at bottom a real gentleman, and not one of those nervous, snobbish make-believes, he wasn't so busy trying to hide his own deficiencies from me that he couldn't teach me anything. He wasn't afraid of being found out, as Sam or perhaps, even Langdon would have been in the same circumstances.
'You don't believe me, then! exclaimed the princess, astonished and angry, as she well might be. 'Did you expect me to believe you, princess? asked the nurse coldly. 'I know princesses are in the habit of telling make-believes, but you are the first I ever heard of who expected to have them believed, she added, seeing that the child was strangely in earnest. The princess burst into tears.
So he allows a lot of make-believe Santa Clauses to go around the streets and in stores, making the children as happy as they can. But they are not the real ones, only make-believes, though some of them are very nice. Then the real Santa Claus has his time to himself.
We see a play, and for the time make ourselves believe that the painted canvas is the Forest of Arden, that the painted man is Orlando, and the painted woman Rosalind. When we read Homer, we make ourselves believe in the Greek heroes and gods. We know these make-believes are not realities, but we feel that they are; we have the sensations that would be effected by their reality.
John's Wood in their unblushing honesty, rather than their imitators and make-believes in Bayswater and Belgravia.
She was still disappointed and hurt, and was trying in her own mind to put several things together. But she rallied as Eunice paused, and said: "I don't know where they are, ary one. The Squire he was after Monty, hot foot. 'Twas him, he said, 'at had set the yarn a-goin'. After all, it might be one his own wild goose make-believes, if if you hadn't owned it was true.
