Señor de Lome made all haste to resign, and the resignation was accepted by his government beforeso it was claimed by the Spanish authoritiesPresident McKinley’s demand for the recall was received. February 15. The de Lome incident was a political matter which caused considerable diplomatic correspondence; but it was overshadowed when the battle-ship Maine was blown up in the harbour of Havana.

By some means, not yet fully explained, certain Cubans got possession of this letter, and caused it to be published in the newspapers. Señor de Lome did not deny having written the objectionable matter; but claimed that, since it was a private communication, it should not affect him officially.

At the end of 1913, France possessed only four of the first-named craft in actual commission and thus immediately available for war, these being the Adjutant Vincenot, Adjutant Reau, Dupuy de Lome, and the Transaerien. The first three are of 197,800 cubic feet. All, however, were privately owned.

The creation of such a ship had preoccupied M. Dupuy de Lome for a long time past. He had gone to England to see and study everything there both in the State dockyards and the building yards at Liverpool and on the Clyde. We had often talked the whole thing over together, and our views on the subject were in perfect agreement.

For, of a sudden, a swift pattering footfall and a glimmer of moving light had sprung into being and drawn his eyes upward; and there, overhead, was Miss Lome coming down the stairs from the upper floor in a state of nervous excitement, and with a bedroom candle in her shaking hand, a loose gown flung on over her nightdress, and her hair streaming over her shoulders in glorious disarray.

It had suddenly come over him to wonder whether there ever had been an authentic case of heartbreak. Because he had the most terrible ache right in his left side! "But, then," Miss Lome continued, "I’m younger than she is. Her being married makes her seem young, but she’s really twenty-four. I’m only twenty." He shut his eyes, and then opened them.

"He has his enjoyment reflected from theirs." "What do you think of the friend in 'Vanity Fair, who helps his rival?" "One of the fools," replied Holyoake, with an air of settling the matter. Lyle reflected. "I can't believe it that way," he said thoughtfully. One member was Lome Riddle; a big bluff chap with a promising moustache, encouraged by private, tuition.

The pent-up feeling of the people found relief here and there by loud cheering especially at the bulletin boards. Tiny Cuban flags were worn. Crossed American and Cuban flags were everywhere displayed. "The De Lome incident the intercepted letter of the imprudent Spanish Minister, and his subsequent disgrace and recall was another much-discussed topic.

The Secretary of State instructed General Woodford, our minister at Madrid, to demand that the Spanish government immediately recall Minister de Lome, and to state that, if he was not relieved from duty within twenty-four hours, the President would issue to him his passports, which is but another way of ordering a foreign minister out of the country.
