As linguists we shall be content to realize that there are these types and that certain processes in the life of language tend to modify them. Why similar types should be formed, just what is the nature of the forces that make them and dissolve them these questions are more easily asked than answered.

His classical attainments were of the first order, and I doubt if the Union furnished two better or more finished linguists than John A. Quitman and H.S. Foote. Walker and Davis were the leading minds of the period. They were both men of education, extended reading; both men of fine oratorical powers; both men of strong will, ripe judgment, and exceedingly tenacious of purpose.

Among the higher class of fakirs are many extraordinary men, profound scholars, accomplished linguists and others whose knowledge of both the natural and the occult sciences is amazing.

The Arabs usually command the movement of the camels by "Tzâ;" and when they are to stop, by "Ush;" and, to kneel down, it is a prolonged pronunciation of the guttural ‮خ‬ or Kh-h-h. We may well suppose, however, that the camels which travel this route are expert linguists in the Touarghee and Arabic. We continued all day till the last dull departing solar ray of the west had left us.

But then she herself was beginning to learn that educated Russians are among the most accomplished linguists in the world. What else was she to find out about this strange country before her work as a nurse was over? Could she ever feel so entirely an American again? All at once Nona Davis jumped hastily to her feet. There were hundreds of questions she yearned to ask.

Three entire weeks were passed in this manner. After the first week the girl herself materially assisted the linguists in their efforts to ac-quire her speech. At length the task was so far advanced that we could, in a certain sense, regard it as practically completed. The Heidelberg professor declared that he had mastered the tongue of the ancient Aryans. His delight was unbounded.

Founded primarily as seats of learning, their teachers have been not only scientists and linguists, philosophers and historians, but men and women of holy purposes, sound patriotism, courageous convictions, refined and noble tastes. Set as these teachers have been upon a hill, their light has at no period of our country's history been hid.

"Is ah is oh, yes: Is Sanskrit a more difficult language than Spanish, Mr. Kinosling?" "It depends upon the student," replied the oracle smiling. "One must not look for linguists everywhere. In my own especial case if one may cite one's self as an example I found no great, no insurmountable difficulty in mastering, in conquering either." "And may I ask one?" ventured Mrs. Bassett.

Of late years linguists have been able to make larger historical syntheses than were at one time deemed feasible, just as students of culture have been able to show historical connections between culture areas or institutions that were at one time believed to be totally isolated from each other.

"I'll tell you what to do," said little Guzzy, when the constable hurriedly whispered: "Wait until I get out of hearing." The excitement which possessed Bowerton the next morning, when the events of the previous night were made public, was beyond the descriptive powers of the best linguists in the village.
