Limpy had long since reached the point of saturation and, lurching forth from his new found cronies, he sought other fields of excitement. Likewise did the newcomer, who bore a strange resemblance to the look-out who had been stationed outside at the Dodge house a scant half hour before. What happened later was only a matter of seconds.
"But what has that got to do with the present excitement?" asked Rand. "Listen to this," exclaimed Jack, stopping under an electric light to read a circular that he drew from his pocket. "Three hundred dollars reward. Escaped from jail. Three hundred dollars will be paid for the arrest and detention of one James Rae, alias 'Limpy, who escaped from the jail at Melton on June fifth.
They had learned that their arrested comrades had been beaten in the prison, and that San Roman and Dr. Ortigosa were in the infirmary as a result. The excitement among those present was terrible. "Limpy" was the most strenuous; he was in favour of their all going out that moment and storming the jail. When they had all spoken, Caesar got up and asked them to wait.
"I got rid of my stock quite a while ago, an' counted on givin' Snip a chance to run in the park. The poor little duffer don't have much fun down at Mother Hyde's while I'm workin'." "You might sell him for a pile of money, Limpy, an' he's a heap of bother for you," the new-comer said reflectively, as he stroked the dog's long, silken hair. "Teddy Dixon says he's got good blood in him "
All the 'sistering' in the world won't help a lame man to walk." "I'm not so awfully lame, am I?" "No. Just limpy. But don't try to run yet, Jerry." "Oh, I say " "Just keep your eyes open. You'll see." And then quietly, "You know Phil Laidlaw, don't you?" "Oh, yes, fine chap." "I think it wouldn't harm you to know Phil better. He isn't brilliant, but he's steady, sure, reliable.
"He is the best pupil in our school. We call him 'Limpy. He comes of a very poor family. He came to the school a year ago, knowing nothing, and see him now. He says, and I think he is right, that if he keeps on studying, he will be an eminent man." The audience applauded everything "Limpy" said, and when he finished they hailed him with shouts and cheers.
Limpy Wallace was a constant and consistent admirer of Hugh Morgan. In fact, he might be said to fairly worship the other boy, who had always treated him most kindly, and seemed to sympathize with his having been cheated by a cruel Fate out of the ordinary pleasures connected with the average boy's life. Limpy Wallace would have gone far out of his way to do Hugh a favor.
He threw himself upon him, and strove to bear him to the ground; but Dick, avoiding a close hug, in which he might possibly have got the worst of it, by an adroit movement, tripped up his antagonist, and stretched him on the side walk. "Hit him, Jim!" exclaimed Micky, furiously. Limpy Jim did not seem inclined to obey orders. There was a quiet strength and coolness about Dick, which alarmed him.
Perhaps Tim might have become interested enough to venture across the street, had Master Smith remained on the opposite side very long; but just at that moment the tide of travel slackened sufficiently to admit of a passage, and the excited Pip came toward his acquaintances at full speed. "What kind of a game have you been up to, Limpy?" he demanded, waving the newspaper meanwhile.
A little while after a procession approached the tree under which Hackett, Holly, and Saunders were sitting smoking. Limpy Walker was in the lead, extracting a doleful tune from his concertina. Next came the bride and groom.
