There is really something absolutely absurd as well as repellent in the apparent acceptation that to live the higher, sweeter, fuller, nobler life is a penitential affair, to be endured but not enjoyed, and limited chiefly to Lenten periods and the special holy days of the Christian Church.
The greensward was surrounded by small huts and hovels; a little old stone church on one side, and a hostel near it, shadowed by a single tall elm, beneath which was the very centre of the village wake. Not only was it Midlent, but the day was the feast of a local saint, in whose honour Lenten requirements were relaxed.
Shakespeare had no such "lenten" language in his thoughts; he wrote, as Mr. Becket tells us, "And my pure soot is hang'd!" There is scarcely anything said by Rev. Morgan Dix, in his excellent Lenten Lectures, which was not said by Hannah More in the last century.
