For many reasons which I need not enumerate here, the precautions against impregnation can most easily and effectively be taken by the woman, rather than by the man. But there is this chance a bare chance of accidental impregnation, and we want to eliminate all chances, if possible. Assuming the rubber pessary fits properly, as it will if skilfully selected and applied in the first instance by a competent medical practitioner, then the seminal fluid must remain in the lower part of the vaginal passage.

We have here, it will be admitted, a most remarkable illustration of the principle of development, although in an operation limited to the production of sex only.

There is a close connection in character between mud volcanoes and those intermittent boiling springs named geysers. Cole describes a woman of twenty-four who was delivered without the rupture of the hymen, and Meek remarks on a similar case. We can readily see that, in a case like that of Verdile, in which rectal delivery is effected, the hymen could be left intact and the product of conception be born alive. A natural sequence to the subject of impregnation without entrance is that of artificial impregnation.
