Perhaps men never did idolise generals, and historians, like newspaper correspondents, are simply inventing pretty myths when they tell us about the hero worship paid to Napoleon, Wellington, and the rest. Perhaps the fact is that the conditions of modern warfare tend to obscure the glory of a general.

It was quite true, as he had once said, that though he could not bring about improvements as readily as if he had been landlord, yet he could get at the people much better, and learn their own point of view of what was good for them. They were beginning to idolise him; for, indeed, there was a fascination about him which no one could resist.

"I ought to tell you, I... idolise my son; my old wife I won't speak of we all know what mothers are! but I dare not show my feelings before him, because he doesn't like it.

"Yes; she has gone on a visit to some relations in Yorkshire. She actually has relations; doesn't that sound strange to you and me?" Valentine did not notice this rather cynical remark. "She'll be away ever so long, I suppose?" he said. "I have no idea how long she may stay there. The people idolise her, I understand.

He knew indeed from that first experience something of the sweet mystery of faithful devotion; but now he could only idealise, he could not idolise. The world was full of friendly, gracious, interesting people. Circumstance spun one to and fro among the groups and companies; how could one give a unique regard, when there were so many that claimed allegiance and admiration?

"He may not idolise his past, yet he cannot escape from it." . . . And her thoughts might have travelled farther, but she had put the mare to a walk again and just then her ears caught an unaccustomed sound, or confusion of sounds. At the end of the alley she reined up, wide-eyed.

'I ought to tell you, I ... idolise my son; my old wife I won't speak of we all know what mothers are! but I dare not show my feelings before him, because he doesn't like it.

And further, when our adversaries dispute of the Pope’s infallibility, they grant, for his own person, he may be an heretic, only they hold that he cannot err è cathedra. And shall we now idolise the persons of princes more than Papists do the persons of popes?

How she would never bore a man! And he suddenly imagined a day with her in the country.... Then he thought that his imagination was flying on far too fast. He decided not to be a hopeless fool, but just to go ahead, and talk to her, and get to know her; not to think too much about her. She needn't even know how he felt. To idolise her from a distance would be quite delightful enough.

If it be bad to idolise you, I am the worst of men; if it be good, I am the best. My love for you is above all other love, and my truth to you is above all other truth. Let me have hope and favour, and I am a forsworn man for your sake.
