These, with the adventures of the Emden in the waters of the Far East, the first naval fight off Helgoland, the fight off the western coast of South America, the sinking of the Lusitania, and the exploits of the submarines held the world in constant expectancy and threatened to involve neutral nations, thus causing a collapse of world trade and dragging all the peoples of the earth into the maelstrom of war.
The conflagration of Copenhagen melted the chains that fastened the old gray rock to Denmark, and England, that triumphantly conveyed the whole Danish fleet to her own shores, annexed Helgoland. The island had become much smaller ever since Long Peter, its last chieftain, died.
The storms had swept over it, tearing rocky masses from its shores, and flinging them far into the sea, which had undermined the foundations of Helgoland, and hidden the conquest beneath the waves. Although small, it was the beacon of Europe. In the last days of 1812 the eyes of all German patriots were fixed longingly and hopefully upon that lonely rock in the North Sea.
The whole layout and the vast area of space show that it is the Government's intention to still further increase the plant. In fact, on my last visit to Helgoland and it was more than two years ago I saw the evidence of another shed about to be built. At the station is the most efficient meteorological department of all the stations.
"Message from Admiral Beatty, sir," said the third officer, and passed Jack a slip of paper. Jack read the message, which had been hastily scribbled off by the radio operator. "German squadron of six vessels reported to have left Helgoland and to be headed for the coast of Scotland," the message read. "Proceed to intercept them at full speed. Other vessels being notified."
In the four engagements of importance which had been fought by the end of January, 1915, the British had been the victors in three the battles of the Bight of Helgoland, the Falkland Islands, and the third German raid of January 24, 1915 the Germans had been victors in one the fight off Coronel.
Aug. 25 Japan and Austria break off diplomatic relations. Aug. 28 English win naval battle over German fleet near Helgoland, Aug. 29 Germans defeat Russians at Allenstein; occupy Amiens; advance to La Fere, sixty-five miles from Paris. September 1 Germans cross Marne; bombs dropped on Paris; Turkish army mobilized; Zeppelins drop bombs on Antwerp.
The British remember it from Nelson's raid on Copenhagen; the Germans felt it in 1849, and again when in the fight for very life the little country held its own a whole winter against two great powers on rapine bent; felt it at Helgoland where its sailors scattered their navies and drove them from the sea, beaten.
But when the engagement ended the opposing fleets were within seventy miles of Helgoland, and the German admiralty had ready a fleet of dreadnoughts and another of battle cruisers to engage the British ships when they got within striking distance. By ending the fight when he did the British commander chose not to be led into this trap. Nor was there dissatisfaction in England alone.
The German fleet, now heading west, evidently soon afterward headed south toward the secure waters of the Helgoland Bight, which it was allowed to reach without interference by the British main fleet and apparently without discovery.
