They had been disintegrated, so to speak; some turned this way, some that, and some removed altogether. On those retained for use additions had been built, verandas added, windows enlarged, and many conveniences planned within doors. Trees and vines had also been planted outside, and the inevitable grass-seed sown broadcast.

On rainy days we were supposed to work in the barn, greasing harness, shelling seed-corn and "sifting" grass-seed.
