In the first scene of "Faust," the earth-spirit, whom Faust has evoked, concludes the whirling, dazzling, brief, but gigantic sketch of his function with these words, the majesty of which translation cannot entirely subdue: "I ply the resounding great loom of old Time, And work at the Godhead's live vesture sublime."
At first he showed himself in the garb of a private man, and went about the cities without any of the badges of a king. One who saw him thus at Thebes applied to him not inaptly, the lines of Euripides, Humbled to man, laid by the godhead's pride, He comes to Dirce and Ismenus' side.

Wisdom, with thy sunlike look, Awful goddess! turn thee back, And give way to Love; Who before thee went, with hero heart, Up the steep and stormy path To the Godhead's very throne; Who, unveiling the Holiest, Showed to thee Elysium Through the vaulted sepulchre.

But when the thought of 'You ought' melts into 'For my sake, and through the dissolving face of the cold marble goddess there shine the beloved lineaments of Him who 'wears the Godhead's most benignant grace, the smile upon His face becomes a motive that touches all hearts.
Thus Godhead's resort to law finally costs it half its integrity as if a spiritual king, to gain temporal power, had plucked out one of his eyes and it finally begins secretly to long for the advent of some power higher than itself which will destroy its artificial empire of law, and establish a true republic of free thought. This is by no means the only difficulty in the dominion of Law.
