Coal-mines were frequently passed in this neighborhood on both sides of the Ohio. After dark I was fortunate enough to find a camping-place in a low swamp on the right bank of the stream, in the vicinity of which was a gloomy-looking, deserted house.
He was followed soon after by a tall, thin, gloomy-looking personage, dressed in dark clothing, and somewhat heavily armed, for a period of internal peace.
It had struck him that since the firm was in a shaky state he had better draw the money as soon as possible. In the bank a gloomy-looking cashier took the cheque and stared at it somewhat longer than the occasion seemed to demand. It was but a few minutes, yet it appeared a very long time to the major. "How will you have it?" he asked at last, in a mournful voice.
The very furniture, the red paper with yellow patterns in the drawing-room, the numerous rush-bottomed chairs in the dining-room, the faded wool-work cushions, embroidered with figures of girls and dogs, on the sofa, the branching lamps, and the gloomy-looking portraits on the walls everything inspired an involuntary melancholy, about everything there clung a sense of chill and flatness.

"Where is the old astronomer to search?" he asked, in a low voice. "Oh-h-h-h!" The final exclamation sounded remarkably tremulous. "Anywhere except in my grandmother's bedroom. That of course is sacred.

"And so this is the great Nevada desert!" Peggy Prescott wrinkled her nose rather disdainfully as she gazed from the open window of the car out over the white, glittering expanse dotted here and there with gloomy-looking clumps of sage brush through which they had been traveling for some little time past. "This is it," nodded her brother Roy; "what do you think of it, sis?"
