Thorhall was an honest man and very rich in cattle and livestock, but could hardly get a shepherd to stay in his service; whereat, being sore perplexed, he went for advice to Skapti the Lawman. Skapti promised to get him a shepherd called Glam, a Swede, for which Thorhall thanked him.

There they had a fierce struggle, for the thrall meant to have him out of doors, while Grettir saw that bad as it was to deal with Glam inside the house it would be worse outside, and therefore strove with all his might against being carried out. When they came into the porch Glam put forth all his strength, and pulled Grettir close to him.

Glam saw that there was a bundle lying on the floor, and moved further up the hall and grasped the cloak firmly. Grettir placed his feet against the plank, and yielded not the least. Glam tugged a second time, much harder than before, but still the cloak did not move.

But just after Yule men thought they saw him home at the farm. Folk became exceeding afeard thereat, and many fled there and then. Next Glam took to riding the house-roofs at night, so that he went nigh to breaking them in. Now he walked well-nigh night and day. Hardly durst men fare up into the dale, though they had errands enough there.

"'I am not afraid of such bug-bears, said Glam, 'and think that it will be all the livelier for that. "'You will need all your boldness, said Thorhall, 'It is best not to be too frightened for one's self there. "After this they made a bargain between them, and Glam was to come when the winter nights began.

Thorhall praised God therefor, and thanked Grettir well for that he had won this unclean spirit. Then they set to work and burned Glam to cold coals, thereafter they gathered his ashes into the skin of a beast, and dug it down whereas sheep-pastures were fewest, or the ways of men.

He went up under Sledaass and south along the hill called Armannsfell. Then he saw a man coming down from Godaskog bringing some brushwood with a horse. They met and Thorhall asked him his name. He said it was Glam. He was a big man with an extraordinary expression of countenance, large grey eyes and wolfgrey hair.

And that has fallen since into a proverb, that Glam lends eyes, or gives Glamsight to those who see things nowise as they are. But Grettir rode home to Biarg when he had done his errands, and sat at home through the winter. Of Thorbiorn Oxmain's autumn-feast, and the mocks of Thorbiorn Tardy.

'Skafti has put you into my hands. "'On this condition only will I take service with you, said Glam, 'that I have my own free will, for I am ill-tempered if anything does not please me. "'That will not harm me, said Thorhall, 'and I should like you to come to me. "'I will do so, said Glam; 'but is there any trouble at your place? "'It is believed to be haunted, said Thorhall.

Glam came slowly in and took hold of a bundle lying on the seat, but Grettir planted his foot against a beam, seized the bundle also, and pulled against Glam with such strength that the wrapper was rent between them.
