Philip is said to have retorted this insult by the following inscription on a tree, in which he pretty plainly states the chastisement Alcaeus would receive were he to fall into the hands of his enemy: Unbarked, and leafless, passenger, you see, Fixed in this mound Alcaeus' gallows-tree. Trans. by J. H. MERIVALE.
Then, at the corner of Mincing Lane, where the cloth-workers' shops were thick, all at once there came an uproarious din of men's voices singing together: "Three merry boys, and three merry boys, And three merry boys are we, As ever did sing in a hempen string Beneath the gallows-tree!"
At last they came to a great wide plain, where neither stock nor stone was to be seen, but only a gallows-tree, upon which one poor wight hung dancing upon nothing at all, and there night caught them again. "Aha!" said Babo to himself. "This time I shall have bread and my master none." But listen to what happened. Up stepped the wise man to the gallows, and gave it a sharp rap with his staff.
He passed a weary hand across his brow; his head dropped again; and he moaned and moaned like a man in everlasting pain. Then the darkness lifted a moment, and he stole a furtive glance, like a murderer's at the gallows-tree, at the scene in front.

Now you can go home, and be up here again by breakfast-time. I be an old man, and there's old men that deserve well of the world; but no I must rest how I can!
Now many an ill rede had he given the king or this, but of all his ill redes did this sting home the most; and still would the king hearken to all his evil redes; wherefore he, who might nowise still the wrath within him, cried out that Randver should be taken and tied up to the gallows-tree.
The body of that sagacious ruler of a mighty nation had been dragged out of its tomb among the kings in Westminster, and hanged on the gallows-tree at Tyburn; the senseless deed instigated by the petty revenge of his contemptible successor.
Dolly Dutton, which, with the head and substantial person to which they belonged, were all turned towards the scene of action, could discern plainly the outline of the gallows-tree, relieved against the clear sky, the dark shade formed by the persons of the executioner and the criminal upon the light rounds of the tall aerial ladder, until one of the objects, launched into the air, gave unequivocal signs of mortal agony, though appearing in the distance not larger than a spider dependent at the extremity of his invisible thread, while the remaining form descended from its elevated situation, and regained with all speed an undistinguished place among the crowd.

As the proverb is, he sowed the gallows-acorn, poor wretch, and he reaped the gallows-tree; but that gallows-tree taught him to confess God's justice, and his own sin, and so it may teach others.
