Austerity doth not become us, neither in doctrine nor in conversation. We ourselves live by grace; let us give as we receive, and labour to persuade our fellow-sinners which God has left behind us, to follow after, that they may partake with us of grace. We are saved by grace, let us live like them that are gracious.
About all I can make of it is: Firstly, that my house is for myself to live in, wife and babies included, not for my neighbors to look at; and, secondly, that however much I may try to humbug my fellow-sinners in other ways, I'm not to build a lie into my house, where it is sure to be found out, after I'm dead and gone, if not before. You wonder what my opinion is of architects.
Scuda saw the name of the emperor, and read the first lines, without remarking the date of the document. At the sight of the great imperial seal of dark green wax he became frightened. "Pardon, there is some mistake," said the tribune humbly. "Don't ruin us! We are all brothers and fellow-sinners! I beseech you in the name of Christ!" "I know what acts you commit in the name of Christ.
"What leads you to think so in Marion's case?" "Some look, or tone, or word; something slight, but to my mind conclusive. Fellow-sinners detect one another, you know." "Well, I don't understand what the world is coming to!" exclaimed Miss Du Prel. "Where are the natural instincts?" "Sprouting up for the first time perhaps," Hadria suggested.
Even if it were true that the long-haired and black-habited George Gordon were the debauched profligate that Hannah More and Horace Walpole maintained him to be, he might find fellow-sinners of unquestioned sanity. But the conduct of his public life goes to prove that his wits were diseased.
As for my two fellow-sinners here, I'll wager they weren't two days behind me in their planning. So now, own up, boys!" William and Cyril, however, did not have to "own up." Mrs. Stetson appeared at the moment and created, for them, a very welcome diversion.
And I think that the preacher who feels in his heart that he is neither wiser nor better than his fellow-sinners to whom he is to preach, and that the advices he addresses to them are addressed quite as solemnly to himself, will assume no conceited airs of elevation above them, but will unconsciously wear the demeanor of any sincere worshipper, somewhat deepened in solemnity by the remembrance of his heavy personal responsibility in leading the congregation's worship; but assuredly and entirely free from the vulgar conceit which may be fostered in a vulgar mind by the reflection, "Now everybody is looking at me!"
And now may that righteous God who judges us not here, but hereafter, enable me to prove that I do not deserve an ignominious punishment from my fellow-sinners men! 'My lord, I know not the subtleties of the laws, nor the intricacy of pleadings.
But the good minister had smoothed matters over: had explained that allowances were to be made for those who had been long sitting without the gate of Zion, that, no doubt, a part of the curse which descended to the children of Ham consisted in "having the understanding darkened," as well as the skin, and so had brought his suspicious senior deacon to tolerate old Sophy as one of the communion of fellow-sinners.
