Michael Savonarola, writing his panegyric of Padua about 1440, expressly mentions Perspective as a branch of philosophy taught in the high school; and the influence of Francesco Squarcione, though exaggerated by Vasari, was not inconsiderable. This man, who began life as a tailor or embroiderer, was early interested in the fine arts.

The pattern may, of course, be helped by the colour of the stitching, and there is some art in making the necessary stitches into appropriate pattern. There is quite an epitome of little diapers in that fragment of needlework; and one can hardly doubt that the embroiderer found it great fun to contrive them.
In an old sonnet she is thus commemorated: "She to the eighth king Henry married was And afterwards divorced, when virtuously, Although a queen, yet she her days did pass In working with the needle curiously." Queen Elizabeth was also a clever embroiderer; she worked a book-cover for Katherine Parr, bearing the initials K. P., and it is now in the Bodleian Library at Oxford.
