Every room in the house was wood-panelled, and there was some fine carving on the staircase. The house, with a splendid avenue of limes leading up to it, stood in a large old-world garden, where vast cedar trees spread themselves duskily over shaven lawns round a splashing fountain, and where scarlet geraniums blazed. Such a beautiful old place was quite wasted as a school.
In one the head was enveloped in a dark hood, overshadowing and partly concealing the features; in another she seemed to be peering duskily through a latticed casement, lit by a faint moonlight; a third showed her splendidly attired in evening costume, with jewels in her hair and cars, and sparkling on her snowy bosom.
He was filled with the passion of wander-lust. The darkened walls of the dugout restricted him, those grim, gray earth walls that duskily, grave-like, enclosed the body of him. He must be up and away. He would go to the heart of the wind and find his mother. Seth had gone to the town for feed for his cattle. Cyclona was at home. He took advantage of their absence to start on his journey.
At the far end, a group of palms were outlined in jet black against that vivid lemon-coloured afterglow only seen in hot countries; peacocks, perched on the walls of the court, stood out duskily purple against the glowing expanse of saffron sky, and the sleeping waters of the long pool reflected the golden glory of the flaming vault above them.
Yorke, minus his moccasins, fur-coat and red-serge, lay stretched out upon his cot sleeping heavily, his flushed, reckless, high-bred face pillowed on one outflung arm. Above him, silent guardians of his rest, his grotesque mixture of prints gleamed duskily in the lamp-light.
He walked slowly towards him; but Fanny abruptly left his side, lured by a moth that flitted duskily over the graves. "Your name, sir, I think, is Simon Gawtrey?" said Morton. "I have came to England in quest of you." "Of me?" said the old man, half rising, and his eyes, now completely blind, rolled vacantly over Morton's person "Of me? for what? Who are you? I don't know your voice!"
Through a dark little door came Miss Drake, all in white, and moving quietly, like a symbolic figure of evening, or the genius of the place. Her hair shone duskily as she bent beside the candle, and with steady fingers tilted a vial, from which amber drops fell slowly into a glass. With dark eyes watching closely, she had the air of a young, beneficent Medea, intent on some white magic.
"That you are prepared to leave me here, knowing that El Diablo Cojuelo will force me to become his wife, and accept your own freedom rather than run the risk of punishment," said Myra. "You are prepared to renounce me, Tony?" "No, no, nothing of the sort!" exclaimed Tony, his face flushing duskily. "Nothing of the sort!
While, like swarms of shrill squeaking bats disturbed in the recesses of some age-old cavern by sudden intrusion of voices and of lights, half-formed visions, half-formed ideas, once again, flapped duskily about him, torturing in their multiplicity alike to his senses and his brain.
"Perhaps," archly, "perhaps you'll be returning as the new Mrs. Wickersham?" Barbara flushed duskily. Miss Sarah, however, was gazing at a dog-eared picture a very old-fashioned picture of a youth in brave and resplendent garb of a period long dead.
