A light shone under the door of John Doane's room, and from Gertrude's apartment his daughter's voice demanded to know what was the matter. Daniel announced that he didn't know, but cal'lated to find out, and shuffled down the stairs. The lights in the hall and drawing-room were still burning, Gertrude and John having forgotten to extinguish them.

There had been rumours of some sort of a shift, but no one seemed to have considered the probability of Doane's losing his seat Doane least of all. For a moment the boy stood rigid, looking up at the bulletin-board. Then suddenly he laughed. "All right, Carry," he said, turning to the captain of the second varsity. "Come on; we'll show 'em what a rudder looks like." But it was not to be.

"He's mighty welcome," declared the host, heartily. "Dorothy'll look atter him like his own daughter an' see that he gits enjoyed." At Jake Crabbott's store the loungers were in full attendance on the morning after Parish Thornton's ride to Hump Doane's house, and the rumours that found currency there were varied and for the most part inaccurate.

Its eyes held the beady sharpness of the Indian, and though hardly past babyhood, it stood haughtily rigid and expressionless. The face of the man was not flashing its smile now, but deeply grave, and as his wife's gaze questioned him he spoke slowly. "This is Peter Doane's boy," he said, briefly.

"No, Fred," replied the girl in convincing tones, "I can't. It would be asking too much even if I loved you. Come inside, and I'll make you some strong tea. You can talk to father and me and regain control of yourself." There was a moment of silence. Mallory with the lamp had come to the door at the sound of Doane's loud voice. He was looking at them. Then out of the night came the pound of hoofs.

He had been the unchallenged leader of the Harpers since that interview with old Aaron Capper, and the ally of Jim Rowlett since his bold ride to Hump Doane's cabin, but now it was plain that this leadership was merging rapidly into one embracing both clans.

"Jim Deacon!" There was a note of exhilaration in Junior Doane's voice. He hastily climbed out of the car and joined the coach at Deacon's side. "I'm not going to defend my father now. No one knows him as I do; no one knows as I do the great big stuff that is in him. He and I have always been close, and " "Then you know how he'd feel about any one who took your place in the boat. He can't hurt me.
