First dinner Lady Holland, Eastlake, Lord and Lady Monteagle, Luttrell, Lord Auckland, Lord Campbell, Lady Stratheden, Lady Dunstanville, Baring Wall, and Mr. Hope. Second dinner Lady Charlemont, Lord Glenelg, Lord and Lady Denman, Lord and Lady Cottenham, Lord and Lady Langdale, Sir Charles Lemon, Mr. Hibbert, Landseer, and Lord Clarendon."
Soon he came back with three others the steadiest men of the crew and they made a systematic search for weapons in the wardroom and all staterooms opening from it. Then they locked the doors leading to the captain's quarters and the doors leading forward, and went on deck, leaving Denman a prisoner, free to concoct any antagonistic plans that came to his mind.
When trade was good he had plenty of money and did a large business; but when it was bad his business decreased proportionately; up to the time of the arrest of the crew off the "Nancy" Rigby had been a passive man as far as the illicit traffic event, but when Ike Denman was in jail he sent for Rigby, and the man became an active partisan.
That night, poor Mrs Denman, in a condition of mind that is utterly indescribable, because inconceivable, went through the whole of the dreadful processes which Joe had described; and did it, too, with miraculous presence of mind and energy in her dreams. Gorman was one of those peculiar characters who, in personal appearance, are totally devoid of peculiarity.
It was a series of thumps, oaths, growlings, and the rattling of pots and pans on the galley floor. Then there was silence. "You see," said Denman to Florrie, with mock seriousness, "the baleful influence of a woman aboard ship! It never fails."
They went below at last; but Denman, having slept nearly all day, was long in getting to sleep. A curious, futile, and inconsequential thought bothered him the thought that the cheerful Billings had ceased his singing in the galley.
He did not go to sleep himself, but smoked and waited while the humming turbines gathered in the miles one hour, two hours, nearly three until a quarter to eleven o'clock, when speed was reduced. Remembering his embarrassment of the morning, Denman did not seek the deck, but looked through his deadlight. Nothing but darkness met his eye; it was a black night with rain.
He was in a bad fix after all. Should Denman get to New York ahead of him, he would lose his best grip after all. Something must be done. He must get over to the mainland before one o'clock, in time to take the train with Denman, at all hazards.
Our hero had finished all he had been called upon to do, and was standing leaning against the mast, when Ike Denman approached and said: "Come aft, Ballard, I've a few words to exchange with you." The detective obeyed with alacrity; coming to a halt near the cabin-way, Denman said: "Ballard, you have proved yourself a good hand.
The most notorious sufferers from his rancorous intolerance were Henry Brougham and Mr. Denman, who, having worn silk gowns as Queen Caroline's Attorney General and Solicitor General, were reduced to stuff attire on that wretched lady's death. It is worthy of notice that in old time, when silk gowns were few, their wearers were sometimes very young men.
