Clear and high above the hum of the betting ring rose the notes of a bugle. The last field of the season was being called to the track and instead of the usual staccato summons the bugler blew "Taps." "There she goes, boys!" bellowed the bookmakers. "That's good-by for a whole year, you know! Bet 'em fast! They're on the way to the post! Only a few minutes more!"
He instantly had the bugler sound "boots and saddles," and all the troops with the exception of two companies which we left to guard the train were soon galloping in the direction of the Indian camp. We had ridden about three miles when we met Lieutenant Ward, who was coming slowly toward us.
Bugler is at that time down in a valley with her baby or babies. Usually she has one, but sometimes twins. She has no antlers. "In the fall, when his antlers have hardened, Bugler moves down to join his family. The bigger and stronger he is, the bigger his family is, for he has a number of wives and they all live together in a herd or band of which Bugler is lord and master.
We marched up, however, in order and were under fire for nine hours. Many barbed-wire obstructions were encountered, but the men never faltered. Finally, late in the afternoon, our brave Lieutenant Kinnison said to another officer: "We cannot take the trenches without charging them." Just as he was about to give the order for the bugler to sound "the charge" he was wounded and carried to the rear.
But I suppose a bugler has to play what he is told, no matter how galling to the young boy's proud spirit. The next day, being thoroughly armed, we put on everything red, white and blue that we could think of night-shirts are good for white, and you don't know what you can do with red socks and blue jerseys till you try and we waited by the churchyard wall for the soldiers.
Presently, out on the parade the bugler began to sound the signal, "taps," to extinguish lights, and at the same moment Miller heard the click of the latch at the front door. There had been no footsteps that he could hear, and he thought he might be mistaken. He listened intently, and presently click, click, it went again. Odd, thought Miller.
And now we take off overcoats and monkey-jackets, which were needed when we started in the cold and damp night; the bluejackets fasten theirs over their shoulders, and the officers strap theirs to their saddles. The brief halt is too quickly at an end, and after a ten minutes' rest the advance again sounds down the line from bugler to bugler.
"Well?" inquired he coldly of the gasping terrified wretch. When he could do so, Augustus sobbed out his tale. "Bugler, sound the alarm!" said the officer.
The bugler had dashed down the speed and disappeared behind a wood.
Bismarck used to say that, under the Triple Alliance, an Italian bugler and drummer boy posted on the Franco-Italian frontier would immobilise four French Army Corps. The Alliance disappointed the expectations of Bismarck's successors.
