Many of them, such as 'Betly, 'Linda di Chamonix, and 'Anna Bolena, were successful when produced; but Donizetti aimed merely at satisfying the prevailing taste of the day, and when a new generation sprang up with different sympathies from that which had preceded it, the operas which had seemed the most secure of popularity were soon consigned to oblivion.

During the season of six months she succeeded in establishing her place as one of the most brilliant singers of the age. The success of the latter was so great that it not only freed him from military service but gained him the honor of being crowned. Two years afterwards, "L' Elisir d' Amore" appeared, which he is said to have written in fifteen days.
Lablache also appeared with Pasta in "Anna Bolena," and the great basso, mighty in bulk, mighty in voice, and mighty in genius, fairly startled the public by his extraordinary resemblance to Holbein's portrait of Henry VIII. After singing a farewell engagement in Paris, Mme. Pasta went to Milan to enjoy the last great triumph of her life in 1832 at La Scala.
Of this composer's long list of works only ten or eleven retain any hold on the stage, his best serious operas being "La Favorita," "Linda," "Anna Bolena," "Lucrezia Borgia," and "Lucia;" the finest comic works, "L'Elisir d'Amore," "La Fille du Regiment," and "Don Pasquale." In composing Donizetti never used the pianoforte, writing with great rapidity and never making corrections.
