Eliza Orzeszko, the authoress of "The Argonauts," is the greatest female writer and thinker in the Slav world at present. There are keen and good critics, just judges of thought and style, who pronounce her the first literary artist among the women of Europe. These critics are not Western Europeans, for Western Europe has no means yet of appreciating this gifted woman.

It is believed that Madame de Genlis found this too favourable an opportunity to be slighted. Anonymous satires upon the Queen's performances, which were attributed to the malice of that authoress, were frequently shown to Her Majesty by good-natured friends.

One day she came limping into the room, with her dog Fanchon following in the same lame plight, she laughing heartily at their similarity of gait, and holding up a letter just in from the post. She commissions me to inquire of you all about your new authoress, the writer of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin, who she is, and all you know of her. So let me hear what you have to say about the lady."

Yet Number Five has more esprit, more sparkle, more sense in her talk, than many a famous authoress from whom we should expect brilliant conversation. There are mysteries about Number Five. I am not going to describe her personally.

How large is our debt to the accomplished authoress of "Home," and of those manifold publications of the same character, that enlighten, and bless, the youth of our age. Nor is it in literary walks alone that this class have proved signal benefactors of their species. In the domestic sphere, amid scenes of sickness and affliction, how often have they proved ministering angels.

To start with, the author of "Illusion" is not an authoress at all his real name being Mark Ashburn, as I ought to know, considering I happen to occupy the position of being his uncle. But he will have to rely on his pen for all that, as he is quite aware that he is not expected to lay on his oars, without doing anything more to repay the sacrifices that have been wasted on him.

Yearsly accused her of having defrauded her, of having been actuated only by vanity in bringing her abilities to light a new species of vanity from one authoress to another in short, abused her in the basest and most virulent manner. Would you go to see Mrs. Yearsly? Lo!

He was, for a considerable time, complimented by her enthusiastic panegyric of England, her original ideas of the character and genius of Lord Byron, her veneration for Sir Humphry Davy, and her admiration of Sir Walter Scott. Not remiss was Vivian in paying, in his happiest manner, due compliments to the fair and royal authoress of the Court of Charlemagne.

Elizabeth Montague, the authoress of an Essay on the Writings and Genius of Shakespeare, a work which brought around the writer the best literary men of the time. Miss More's introduction to Dr. Johnson took place at the house of Sir Joshua Reynolds. This event, though much desired, was not without dread, lest the great man should happen to be in one of his querulous moods.

"In literature," writes M. Paul Morillot, "even if quality is wanting, quantity has some significance," and though we may share Scott's abhorrence for the whole "Jemmy and Jenny Jessamy tribe" of novels, we cannot deny the authoress the distinction accorded her by the "Biographia Dramatica" of being for her time, at least "the most voluminous female writer this kingdom ever produced."
