What a general astonishment and amusement there would be when it came out that all had known what each had been enjoying as a secret! Meantime they had been active, and each had gathered a fair quantity of pretty flowers arbutus, violets, anemones, and cherry blooms; to which Teresa and Elsie insisted upon adding buttercups and even dandelions.
This was the wedding of Rodriguez and Serafina, of which gossips often spoke at their doors in summer evenings, old women mumbling of fair weddings that each had seen; and they had been children when they saw this wedding; they were those that threw small handfuls of anemones on the path before the porch. The tall lady came toward us smiling broadly. She exclaimed above the din: "How can I thank you? I see you have brought home our little wanderer Giftie, how can you treat Colin so? Poor Colin lift him up, Giles, she's going to bite him again I suppose there are pups in the hamper. Let's see, boys." We uncovered the hamper proudly. The three puppies lay curled like little sea anemones.
