This inquiry resulted in the establishment of a school for the instruction of heathen youth who were found in our land; and of the privileges of this school these two boys gladly availed themselves. Shortly after they were taken to Andover and made acquainted with a class of young men who were about to graduate and go forth as heralds of salvation.
Of the eight children that came to Simon and Anne Bradstreet, but one was born in the "great house" at Andover, making his appearance in 1652, when life had settled into the routine that thereafter knew little change, save in the one disastrous experience of 1666.
Timothy Dwight, whose travels in America were read with the same interest that we bestow now upon the "Merv Oasis," or the "Land of the White Elephant," wrote of North Andover, which then held many of its original features: "North Andover is a very beautiful piece of ground. Its surface is elegantly undulating, and its soil in an eminent degree, fertile.
Olinthus Gregory's moral wisdom treat the Nicenists as in obvious error for not having magnified Christ enough. On so many other sides, however, I met with the new and short creed, "Jesus is Jehovah," that I began to discern Sabellianism to be the prevalent view. A little later, I fell in with a book of an American Professor, Moses Stuart of Andover, on the subject of the Trinity.
Andover would be unable to see him for some time: that the patient just operated on was doing as well as could be expected. "He he's come through all right?" "Yes. You might call up in an hour or so." The Spider rose stiffly and put on his hat. "Thanks," he said and hobbled out and across the lobby.
He was decades later in his work. He took up the central religious problem when Channing's successors were following either Emerson or Parker. The Andover address consisted in the statement of Bushnell's views of the causes which had led to the schism in the New England Church.
Quincy and Tom spent one more year at Andover. When they parted from the old school it was with feelings of deep regret. "I could be happy here for ten years more," said Quincy. "So could I," replied Tom. "But, after all, this is only a narrow path in the world of knowledge. Harvard is but a street and when we get out into the world I suppose we shall find a boulevard."
The Andover sunsets blazed behind Wachusett, and between the one window of my little room and the fine head of the mountain nothing intervened.
I presume that when, less than five weeks afterwards, eight more persons were hanged there, belonging to respectable families in what are now Peabody, Marblehead, Topsfield, Rowley and Andover, as well as Salem, and a spectacle again presented to which crowds flocked from all quarters, and to which many particularly interested must have been drawn, besides those from the populous neighborhood, especially if men "on horseback" mingled in the throng, the ground must have been considerably trampled upon.
In still later years I was allowed to build over, for my own purposes, the summer-house under the big elm in my father's garden, once used by my mother for her own study, and well remembered by all persons interested in Andover scenery.
