The steward looked up at the starry sky and said: "The moon is already tolerably high, and my lord meant to be home before sun-down." "The meal was ready," sighed the cook. "I shall have to go to work again if he does not remain all night." "How should he?" asked the steward. "He is with the princess Bent- Anat." "And my mistress," added the dwarf.

Anu, whose name is written Anah in Hebrew, was the god of the sky, and he stood at the head of the Babylonian pantheon. His wife Anat was but a colourless reflection of himself, a grammatical creation of the Semitic languages. But she shared in the honours that were paid to her consort, and the divinity that resided in him was reflected upon her.

The old man cried out at the blow, and at the cry the paraschites stricken down with stones his own struggle with the mob and the appearance of Bent Anat flashed into Pentaur's memory.

Each of them duplicated himself, Anu into Anat, Bel into Belit, Ea into Damkina, and united himself to the spouse whom he had produced from himself. Other divinities sprang from these fruitful pairs, and, the impulse once given, the world was rapidly peopled by their descendants.

As these thoughts ran at lightning speed through his mind, he saw a faint glow inside the room. He crept forward and looked round the side of the doorway. The man had a little electric lamp in his hand and was flashing the slender rays all over the room. He drew his head back quickly as he heard him say: "There is nothing here, Anat. Georgiana, glancing at the first marked reference, found cause to credit this statement, for it read: Cagnetto: Zur Frage der Anat. Beziehung zwischen Akromegalie u. Hypophysistumor, Virchow's Archiv., 1904, clxxvi., 115. Neuer Beitrag. f.

Hence some remote progenitor of the whole vertebrate kingdom appears to have been hermaphrodite or androgynous. This is the conclusion of Prof. Gegenbaur, one of the highest authorities in comparative anatomy: see 'Grundzuge der vergleich. Anat. 1870, s. 876.

The different races differ much in hairiness; and in the individuals of the same race the hairs are highly variable, not only in abundance, but likewise in position: thus in some Europeans the shoulders are quite naked, whilst in others they bear thick tufts of hair. "You would rather she should reverence you so," said Nefert smiling. "Not at all," cried Rameri. "But I helped to save her, and I am so happy when I am sitting with her, that to-morrow, I am resolved, I will put a flower in her hair. It is red certainly, but as thick as yours, Bent- Anat, and it must be delightful to unfasten it and stroke it."

Mena kissed the king's robe; then he said: "Nefert has left Katuti's house, and as thou knowest has followed thy daughter, Bent-Anat, to the sacred mountain, and to Megiddo." "I thought the change was a good one," replied Rameses. "I leave Bent- Anat in the care of Bent-Anat, for she needs no other guardianship, and your wife can have no better protector than Bent-Anat."
