Then she laughed heartily, and asked: "Confess now; don't you think it's beautiful?" Donald smiled broadly as he replied: "It's really quite wonderful. Did you do it yourself?" "To be sure I did, when I was a little girl and we used to work in wool from samplers, and learn to do alphabets. I'm glad you appreciate it.

The alphabet received by the Italians was by no means the oldest Hellenic one; it had already experienced several modifications, particularly the addition of the three letters "id:xi", "id:phi", "id:chi" and the alteration of the signs for "id:iota", "id:gamma", "id:lambda". We have already observed that the Etruscan and Latin alphabets were not derived the one from the other, but both directly from the Greek; in fact the Greek alphabet came to Etruria in a form materially different from that which reached Latium.

Now, in the apostolic age, the Jews, Greeks and Romans, were accustomed to express numbers by the use of the letters of their respective alphabets. This we suppose to be the only rational and probable method of solving the mystery.

Runes were, as it is well known, the characters used by the Teutonic tribes of northwest Europe before they received the Latin alphabet. They are divided into three principal classes, the Anglo-Saxon, the Germanic, and the Scandinavian, bearing the same relation to each other as do the different Greek alphabets. Their likeness to each other is so great that a common origin may be ascribed to all.

The most important of these, which it is interesting to keep in view as bearing on the history of Italian writing, are the following: I. The introduction of special signs for the sounds "id:xi" "id:phi" "id:chi". This proposal is so old that all the Greek alphabets with the single exception of that of the islands Thera, Melos, and Crete and all alphabets derived from the Greek without exception, exhibit its influence.

According to our modern authorities this exactly explains the phenomena of the early Greek alphabets; many in variety, and so diverse that each has to be learned separately, and yet entirely uniform in order. Each tribe had its own signs for certain sounds, varying a good deal; yet all had to follow a fixed numerical system.

Max Muller, and other renowned linguists, declared that all languages are derived from one. This is abundantly proven by the similarity of roots and words, the grammatical construction and accidents, the correspondence in the order of their alphabets, etc.

Many of us would, if we could; but none of us so much as know our letters in the stars yet or seem likely to do it, in this state of existence- -and few languages can be read until their alphabets are mastered. At about this time a stranger appeared in Cloisterham; a white- haired personage, with black eyebrows.

If so much is done in a day, how much in a few decades of centuries? Surely, at our present rate, in a very conceivable length of time, the resources of two alphabets would be exhausted. And this may be the reason and providence in the amount of writing now going on, to get human language written up.
