There is no better example of the way a spring can be developed by clever handling, and satisfactory results obtained from advertising and judicious expenditure, than Aix-les-Bains, which twenty years ago was but a tiny mountain village, and to-day ranks among the wealthiest and most brilliant eaux in Europe.
Jack supplied the blanks in our somewhat broken correspondence, by skimming over the details of their doings; how they had spent most of their time since our parting in Switzerland; how they had arrived at Aix-les-Bains the very morning we left for Mont Revard; and how they had motored to Chambéry yesterday afternoon.
The errand that had brought her from Aix-les-Bains was confessedly a merciful one. But she possessed the dramatist's instinct to prolong a situation. Thus, to make her act of mercy seem infinitely larger than it was, she was determined first to cast the Apple of Discord into this charming corner of Eden.
During the war of 1914-1915, she had charge of the linen room in the military hospital at Aix-les-Bains. On March 8, 1899, the trustees announced their election of Wellesley's fifth president, Caroline Hazard. In June, Mrs. Irvine retired, and the new administration dates from July 1, 1899.
She announced that she meant to leave Aix-les-Bains at an early hour, lunch and rest at Culoz, and go on to Dijon by the afternoon train. "But why Culoz? Nobody stops at Culoz," he remonstrated. "Why not Culoz? There is an inn. I suppose we can get some lunch," she answered. "Besides, I have always meant to go there, to look at the château on the hill! You English like 'views, do you not?
But there" she sighed a loud, heaving sigh "we 'ad a friend a dear young friend with us at Aix-les-Bains." "Yes, I know," said Sylvia, sympathisingly. "You know?" Madame Wachner looked at her quickly. "What is it that you know, Madame?" "Madame Wolsky told me about it. Your friend was drowned, was he not? It must have been very sad and dreadful for you and your husband."
"If," she continued, "you are willing to take me on this understanding, I am ready to be your wife." Needless to say I was willing to accept these terms, and three months afterwards we were man and wife. It was in the month of July that we were married, and we went to Aix-les-Bains for the honeymoon. A few days previously Mr.
On reaching Aix-les-Bains, we found the omnibus that did the service de la ville, but the Colonel refused to enter it, and declared he would walk; he cared nothing for the degradation of appearing in the public streets as a prisoner marching between a couple of gendarmes.
As we struck up the steep hill that leads out of Aix-les-Bains and civilisation, passing with all our little procession into the oak copses which fringe the lower slopes of Mont Revard, the Boy and I agreed that nothing became the town so well as the leaving it behind. At last little Aix unveiled her face to us, as we looked down upon it from airy altitudes.
"Then where in the world am I?" "Oh you're an extra. There are always extras." "A complete set and one over?" Vanderbank laughed. "Where then's Tishy?" Charming and grave, the girl thought a moment. "She's in Paris with her mother on their way to Aix-les-Bains." Then with impatience she continued: "Do you know that's a great deal to say what you said just now?
