Aiken were from the North of Ireland, particularly from Londonderry, Antrim and Belfast. At an early day one or two colonies came over to this country and settled on a tract of land on the Merrimac River, in New Hampshire, calling it Londonderry, after the name of the city from which most of them had emigrated.

A student of the subject, however, has shown that there was a Negro Baptist church at Silver Bluff, "on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River, in Aiken County, just twelve miles from Augusta, Ga.," founded not earlier than 1773, not later than 1775. In any case special interest attaches to the First Bryan Baptist Church, of Savannah, founded in January, 1788.

"Just tell me my name." "You is Mista Mannering, boss." "Hum, that's too easy," I said. "I've been coming to Aiken a great many years. What is my horse's name?" "Her name is He'win, boss." "Hum," I said and felt a little creepy feeling of wonder. "Does you want to know any mo'?" I nodded. "You's flighty, boss, but you ain't bad.

I wish I could say as much for Mr. Aiken." At that moment Aiken, being quite innocent, said even less for himself, and because he was innocent looked the trapped and convicted criminal. Laguerre's eyes glowed like two branding-irons. As he fixed them on Aiken's face one expected to see them leave a mark. "If the General will only listen," Aiken stammered. "If you will only give me a hearing, sir.

I was standing guard outside." Aiken snorted indignantly. "No, I don't remember you," he said. "But I'll remember you next time. Are you standing guard now, or just doing a little highway robbery on your own account?" "Oh, I'm standing guard for keeps," said the sentry, earnestly. "Our camp's only two hundred yards back of me.

This low tide in financial matters was characterized by remarkable religious developments; slavery, temperance and Millerism became church questions; and it was regarded as the peculiar mission of Mr. Aiken to distinguish between truth and error. His moderation, judicious advice, and devoted character were just calculated to conduct his charge safely through the distractions of that period.

We destroyed, in passing, the railroad from the Edisto nearly up to Aiken; again, from Orangeburg to the Congaree; again, from Colombia down to Kingsville on the Wateree, and up toward Charlotte as far as the Chester line; thence we turned east on Cheraw and Fayetteville. At Colombia we destroyed immense arsenals and railroad establishments, among which wore forty-three cannon.

At Duluth I received two large packages of new goods, which came C.O.D., and which took nearly my last dollar. I carried with me a leather trunk in which to keep my reserved stock, and as I had but a few moments' spare time, after receiving the goods at Duluth, before the train left for Aiken, Minnesota, I put all of my new goods in the leather trunk, leaving but a small stock in my sample case.

A few moments later he returned, smiling, as if she had said something that had touched his humor. "Let's sit on the bench," he said. "It's the one cool place in Aiken, this morning." Mechanically I sat down beside him and accepted a cigarette from his case. "I always dread the first hot spell for the babies," he said. "I'm glad we're going up early this year." "You'll be in New York a while?"

As consular agent Aiken needed no passport for himself, but to avoid suspicion he informed the commandante that his object in visiting Tegucigalpa was to persuade Joseph Fiske, as president of the Isthmian Line, to place buoys in the harbor of Porto Cortez and give the commission for their purchase to the commandante. Aiken then and always was the most graceful liar I have ever met.
