For instance, in 1763 Anton, the son of Nicolaus, was married, and Haydn composed a pastoral, Acis and Galatea, which was duly performed. Again, in 1764 Prince Nicolaus attended the coronation of the Archduke Joseph; his return was one of these events, and to celebrate it Haydn wrote a grand cantata.

And yet these anthems were most significant in the variety of the choruses and in the range of the accompaniments; and it was then, no doubt, that Handel was feeling his way toward the great and immortal sphere of his oratorio music. Indeed, his first oratorio, 'Esther, was composed at Cannons, as also the English version of 'Acis and Galatea."

Though only a corner of it touched him it overwhelmed him. "All that fate left in my power I did for Acis. I endowed him with the honors of his grandfather the river-god. The purple blood flowed out from under the rock, but by degrees grew paler and looked like the stream of a river rendered turbid by rains, and in time it became clear.

THE HE-ANCIENT. Yet I have seen you walking over the mountains alone. Have you not found your best friend in yourself? ACIS. What are you driving at, old one? What does all this lead to? THE HE-ANCIENT. It leads, young man, to the truth that you can create nothing but yourself. Ecrasia: you are clever. Do you understand it? I don't.

Was it from a ghostly vision of the last time she had sung it that is properly, to a piano-forte accompaniment, played by fingers that had afterward caught hold of her trembling fingers, and been a living comment on the song? It was that exquisite one from Handel's "Acis and Galatea:"

As much as I sought his society, so much did the cyclops seek mine; and if you ask me whether my love for Acis or my hatred for Polyphemus was the stronger, I cannot tell you; they were in equal measure. Oh, Venus, how great is thy power!

ACIS. Yes: inhuman. Why don't you fall in love with someone? ECRASIA. I! I have been in love all my life. I burned with it even in the egg. ACIS. Not a bit of it. You and Arjillax are just as hard as two stones. ECRASIA. You did not always think so, Acis. ACIS. Oh, I know. I offered you my love once, and asked for yours. ECRASIA. And did I deny it to you, Acis?

When I was a child, Ecrasia, I, too, was an artist, like your sculptor friends there, striving to create perfection in things outside myself. I made statues: I painted pictures: I tried to worship them. THE HE-ANCIENT. I had no such skill; but I, like Acis, sought perfection in friends, in lovers, in nature, in things outside myself. Alas! I could not create if. I could only imagine it.

Her sex is discoverable only by her voice, as her breasts are manly, and her figure otherwise not very different. She wears no clothes, but has draped herself rather perfunctorily with a ceremonial robe, and carries two implements like long slender saws. She comes to the altar between the two young men. ACIS. More than ready, Ancient. Shouting and kicking and cursing.

Thus was Straws classic in his taste, affecting the instrument wherein Acis sighed his soul and breath away for fair Galatea! It had been a lazy, purposeless day. He had awakened at noon; had coffee and rolls in bed; had dressed, got up, looked out, lain down again, read, and vainly essayed original composition.
