Not long after this, on the 14th of March, the regiment was on parade, when the commanding officer read a letter to us which he had just received. It was to the effect that a few men might volunteer for the 42nd Royal Highlanders and 79th Cameronian Highlanders.

At the foot of the monument erected to the memory of General Oglethorpe, was added the following inscription: "His disconsolate Widow died October 26,1787, in her 79th year, and is buried with him, in the vault in the centre of this Chancel. Her fortitude of mind and extensive charity deserve to be remembered, though her own modesty would desire them to be forgotten."

"Never mind, O'Malley," said the major, "the Portuguese will only be flattered by the attention, if you land as you are." "Why, how so?" "Surely, you remember what the niggers said when they saw the 79th Highlanders landing at St. Lucie.

After breakfast, my American soldier companion being naturally solicitous to witness guard mounting, I accompanied him on to the parade, and had the pleasure of seeing the 79th Highlanders come on the ground, with the band and pipes playing alternately.

March, 1853, saw Sir Colin Campbell in England; but though he had passed his sixtieth year, most of which had been spent in his country's service, his rest was not of long duration, as in 1854 he went out to the Crimea in command of the Highland brigade, consisting of the 42nd, 79th, and 93rd regiments.

But when your countenance fill'd up his line, Then lack'd I matter; that enfeebled mine the expression "when your countenance filled up his line" referring obviously to the beauty of the young actor giving life and reality and added charm to Chapman's verse, the same idea being also put forward in the 79th Sonnet

Montfaucon will fall to-morrow. This is the last of the big shows." He paused, and his eyes, which McGee had always thought so cold, twinkled with merriment. "By the way," he said, "at Division Headquarters of the 79th, where I made a report and was given transportation back here, the Intelligence Officer told me a spy was nabbed last night a chap by the name of von Herzmann.

In the evening there was once more a great dinner at Holyrood Scotts, Kerrs, Bruces, Primroses, Murrays, &c., &c, being gathered round their Queen. A month afterwards at Ballater, amidst pouring rain, her Majesty presented new colours to the 79th regiment, "Royal Scots," of which her father was colonel when she was born.

His ancestor emigrated to America soon after the '45 and fought tinder Wolfe against the French at Quebec. Simon Cameron was also for a time Secretary of War in Lincoln's Cabinet and Minister to Russia. He named his residence at Harrisburg "Lochiel." His brother James was Colonel of the New York Volunteers, the 79th Highlanders, in the Civil War. He served on many important committees.

To the north-east beyond the topes is the battle-ground of Chinhut, where Lawrence received so terrible a reverse at the beginning of the siege. Due north is the Kookrail viaduct which Outram cleared with the Rifles and the 79th, and in whose vicinity Jung Bahadour, the crafty and bloodthirsty generalissimo of Nepaul, "co-operated" by a demonstration which never became anything more.
