This noble ordinance of 1787, then rather affirmed a principle of freedom, than imposed a necessary practical prohibition, for it may be well to know, that notwithstanding the ordinance, there were as late as 1810, in Indiana, 237 slaves, and as late as 1820, in Illinois, 917 slaves, but upon a soil fitted by nature for the vigorous growth of freedom, African slavery, the tree of tropic climes, could not grow, and it withered and died, as it had done before in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
In the accompanying commentary by Abu Zeid, we are informed that the date of the narrative was of the Hegira 237, A.D. 851, which circumstance was probably contained in the missing part of the manuscript; but though written then, it is probable that the first journey of the author was undertaken at least twenty years before that date, or in 831, as he observes, that he made a second journey into the same countries sixteen years afterwards, and we may allow four years for the time spent in the two journies, and the intervening space, besides the delay of composition after his last return.

Compensation in money was paid, from 21,000 pounds to the Duke of Argyll to 13 pounds, 6s. 8d. to the clerks of the Registrar of Aberbrothock. The whole sum was 152,237 pounds, 15s. 4d. The estates were restored in 1784; meanwhile the profits were to be used for the improvement of the Highlands.
When the stipulated time had passed, Paul rose from the bench on which he was seated, and walked to Lovejoy's Hotel, not far distant. "Has Mr. Felix Montgomery a room here?" he asked. "Yes," answered the clerk. "Did you wish to see him?" "Yes, sir." "He mentioned that a boy would call by appointment. Here, James, show this boy up to No. 237 Mr. Montgomery's room."
But blessed be God! a good Bill this week we have; being but 237 in all, and 42 of the plague, and of them but six in the City: though my Lord Bruneker says, that these six are most of them in new parishes where they were not the last week. Here was with us also Mr. Williamson, who the more I know, the more I honour.
Miss Burney, describing him in 1783, says: 'He looks unformed in his manners and awkward in his gestures. He joined not one word in the general talk. Mme. D'Arblay's Diary, ii. 237. So little in general, had the island of Savu been known, that Mr. Cook had never seen a map or chart in which it is clearly or accurately laid down. The middle of it lies in about the latitude of 10 35' south, and longitude 237 30' west; and from the ship it presented a prospect, than which nothing can be more beautiful.
The Frothinghams are nice people and old friends and they have more money than some people have hay, but that doesn't give them a license to spoil one of my perfectly good evenings by sprinkling a lot of canned music and fricasseed recitations all over it. The Frothinghams have a skeleton in their closet. Its name is Uncle Heck and he weighs 237 not bad for a skeleton. Uncle Heck is a Joe Morgan.
